Muncaster Castle
Once you’ve tramped the fells and forests around Grasmere, why not take a scenic drive through the heart of the Lake District to Muncaster Castle? This historic stronghold’s halls, gardens and woodlands are well worth a wander, while local walks lead up to Muncaster Fell and down to the Roman harbour village of Ravenglass.

Lovely old rambling property. We booked both houses and they are back to back. The beds were clean and comfy and the views are stunning. It’s a quick walk to Muncaster castle. There are guinea fowl in the garden and nesting in the trees. They have Starlink WiFi for those who are interested although you won’t know this until you go!
Having access to community dining, laundry and lounge was convenient and enjoyable. While the location of Ravenglass was a little isolated with no towns of note and absence of amenities the actual Muncaster Castle made up for it. The gardens were an absolute delight - even in the rain with very damp ground. It was one of the very few countryside or garden areas we heard birdlife. The bird shows were fabulous presented by friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Location was excellent historic house membership meant we combined stay with looking at castles etc including Muncaster Castle.Groungs we’re really lovely with stunning views when the weather permitted.Accomodation was clean comfortable and quiet.
Being right on the sea estuary we spent hours walking up and down the beach and watching the tide coming in and going out. Muncaster Castle is also a treat and we could wander the grounds for hours too.
We absolutely love Muncaster Castle, it is perfect for a family break. So much to do and see do inside the grounds, but also outside the castle grounds too. The Pennington Hotel is great for food and the Esdale Railway is a fun ride. Also the beach at Ravenglass is so peaceful and great for kids to have a play. This was our second stay at Muncaster Castle and can't wait to go back!
Everything was spot on! I highly recommend Ravenglass, muncaster castle and the Pennington hotel. Ravenglass is a little gem and the hotel could not be faulted. Muncaster castle (5 minute drive from Ravenglass) is well worth a visit…. Owl display, bird of prey show, castle and grounds are all amazing! 💯 will be staying there again.
The place was really big and the beds were comfy. The lounge was nice and there were loads of chairs for the dining table. The showers were also quite good and the rooms were all clean. The house was very warm and having the use of a dryer meant we could dry our clothes out after a long walk in the rain.
The location read great for walking and we were straight out onto the feels via muncaster castle.
There was mobile coverage in most rooms.
appeared to be the only hotel in town that was open. Pretty drab and tired looking. would not book again. also location was uninteresting, one horse town, little or no amenities . Visited Muncaster castle which was an enjoyable day out
I loved the location - we had visited Ravenglass before, but only as a day trip. It was lovely to be so close to the estuary - we saw several birds including oyster catchers and egrets. The hotel was friendly, it had real ale and the food was excellent. Our room was spacious and comfortable. I had requested twin beds, which was not ready when we arrived, but they made up another room for us. We travelled on the narrow gauge railway and attended an owl flying display at Muncaster castle.
2 good pubs within short distance, railway near by, muncaster castle not too far away and a lovely day our for all the family. Property clean and comfortable , easy to access and owners sent us some great information to help us plan our stay
