Pelourinho is the old neighborhood of the city of Salvador—it's where Salvador began. Many of the buildings in this area date back to the 16th Century. Any visit to Salvador would be incomplete without a trip to Pelourinho.
This neighborhood was the seat of Imperial Portuguese power in Brazil starting in 1549.
While at times, this neighborhood may seem a bit like Disneyland Brazil (with the many women dressed as Bahianas bugging you to take a photo with them & then trying to charge you R$20 for the pic), I still recommend you come.
There are the many churches to visit (Church of Sao Francisco, aka “the golden church” and the Cathedral of Santissimo Salvador); there is much beautiful architecture to admire; there is a wonderful hotel right in the heart of Pelourinho (Hotel Villa Bahia—I highly recommend it); you can visit the Elevador Lacerda; there are lots of souvenir shops. If you have more time and the interest, you could take a capoeira lesson. If you are short on time, you can get a guided tour in golf cart that lasts about 2 hours and costs somewhere between R$150 to R$250, depending on how much bargaining you feel like doing.
There are ice cream shops, bars and restaurants you can visit (although I think some of the best restaurants are located just outside, but not far from Pelourinho).
The reason I do not give this neighborhood 5 stars is because of the beggars and the potential risk of crime—use common sense and don’t wander into deserted side streets late at night and you will be fine.

Salvador’s cobblestoned central old town, Pelourinho, is the place to be. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and music is everywhere, especially Tuesday nights and on weekends. This area is not large so wandering around is easy and fun. People watching is great here. Be careful in crowds because pickpockets do operate in Salvador. Police provide good security to keep this area safe – wandering too far outside is not recommended, especially at night.
Salvador’s main square in the Pelourinho, Terreiro de Jesus, is surrounded by bars and sometimes has performers during the day. Taxis can be found here. It leads into our favorite nighttime square, Largo do Cruzeiro de Sao Francisco that has restaurants where you can sit outside and enjoy music. You should try a unique Bahia dish such as Moqueca, a rich fish stew.
Three of Salvador’s squares have been set up with stages offering music shows many days. Largo Pedro Arcanjo and Largo Tereza Batista are accessed from the streets Gregorio De Matos and Largo Quincas Berro D’Agua from Rua V.C. Rarelo. The shows are often free or have small cover charges (unless a big name band comes in). You can stand and dance or sit at a table enjoying a drink or meal at several restaurants.

The staff are all very friendly and welcoming
The hostel is also 5 minutes walk from Pelourinho Square so perfect for exploring the old town of Salvador.
The breakfast was good and I liked the fresh fruit and juices lthough I thought some of the things could be labelled as they are traditional Bahian dishes and a foreigner obviously won't know what they are (sweet or savoury).
the STAFF IS AMAZING! AMEII. They don't speak a perfect English but they are trying and they know enough
i shared a room with other 3 girls which was ok. the apartments are way better.
the location is perfect, 3 minutes away from pelourinho and that street is very safe!!
i had ones of the best memories there
The hostel is well located in the city. it is close to the Pelourinho and other touristic points but also close from the metro station. The ruler is also super friendly guy !
This is a satisfyingly simple, clean, frugal hotel in a good area of Salvador. It’s not luxurious but it doesn’t try to be and it is priced for what it is. Nice swimming pool and gym. It’s in a “practical” part of Salvador, which is just fine. About a 20 min cab ride (which isn’t expensive) to places like Pelourinho and Rio Vermelho. We felt safe, secure, clean and comfortable.
A fantastic art deco gem of a hotel, a few meters from the Pelourinho. Friendly, helpful staff, fantastic roof bar and pool with wonderful views over the bay of Salvador and sunsets. Bedroom on 7th floor was very comfortable and spacious, with partial views of the bay. Breakfast, although not a buffet, was excellent with a good choice and efficient. Dinner in the hotel had the best Moqueca of my visit to Brazil. We spent our last few days in Brazil here and loved every minute of it. Highly recommended.
The location of the hostel is top tier : near the heart of the Pelourinho, restaurants and main attraction are 2min walk from the hostel.
The room was very spacious, and bathroom just what you need, nothing fancy.
The people working here are very helpful and nice trying their best to make your stay confortable
The hotel is located in the heart of Pelourinho, just a few steps from Terreiro de Jesus, where you can get an Uber or a cab. The staff was really nice and solicitous. Comfortable rooms.
The best hostel in Pelourinho. The staff was incredibly warm and friendly and gave great reccomendations, the breakfast was above standard brazilian breakfast, the rooms were clean and comfortable with plugs at every bed and a drying line for your towel, and there are many places in the hostel to relax, meet people, and read/chat with loved ones back home.
