Akune
Situated in Akune, 24 km from Sendai-kō, Shioya Hostel features accommodation with free bikes, free private parking and a shared lounge. The accommodation offers a shared kitchen, and luggage storage for guests. The owners are very nice people and they live just across the road. They also have a nice cafe there. When I arrived, during check in, their children were there doing their homework in the cafe. Thus, it made me feel at home, and being glad that what I paid would be going to directly support a family, and not shareholders of a large hotel chain. The hostel is very clean, and I could have the privacy I needed with their setup of private rooms, yet benefiting from the hostel atmosphere experience. Very comfortable single bed, better than some hotels I stayed here in Japan. Laundry was free and they provided detergent. They recommended a very good izakaya in the vicinity. Finally, their garage provided a safe place to store my bicycle.
Amami

View from our room is so beautiful. We could see beach and natural forest on so on. Staffs are very kind, friendly and flexible for our requests. Around the guest house, there is nothing, so I could forget everything and got relaxed. Everything is amazing for me.

I loved the welcoming of staff when I arrived. The cleanliness of the place, the white decor is really effective and makes it look beachy themed it’s nice and trendy. I loved that the staff helped me get to places I didn’t know tbh too. Decent fan in the pod I stayed in and the shared bathroom and sink was always cleaned.

I had a great time at Minam! The place itself is clean, comfortable, relaxing. The surrounding area is so beautiful and peaceful. Not many people with Many amazing beaches really close by. The people were fun and kind. Highly recommend and definitely want to come back! I think it’s the best place to experience the Amami life.

The location of the guesthouse is excellent. It is not only close to the pier but also near a supermarket and a self-service laundromat, making it very convenient for backpackers.
Hostel located in an old building, set to be demolished soon. Old style house with a good vibe. Tatami room with bunk beds, single room with futon. Kitchen is equipped so I bought groceries and cooked. You can stay in the living room and socialise with other guests. Location is ideal, near Tenmonkan and port. Good bakery just down the street.
Everything was great- 1) Location (4 mins away from Kagoshima JR station) 2) Staff - very friendly and accommodating 3) Facilities - Shared kitchen with free tea, utensils etc. Free use of the washing machine (Small fee if you want to use the tumble dryer, but if you aren't short of time, there is a clothes air drying area) 4) Female Dormitory room - Warm and comfy. Individual lockers were provided. The curtains on the bunk bed were thick so could sleep in privacy. (The beds were futon beds, so westerners may find it a bit thin)
I never stayed in a hostel before. So It was strange to me. But is was cheap so I can’t complain
Staff were very friendly and helpful (even when we had to come back for something we left behind, they found it and kept it safe for us). The double bunk room was decent. The rooftop area and kitchen were great - there is even a beer vending machine! Great location right next to the Toppy Ferry terminal. I would have liked to stay longer at this guesthouse.
Cheap and cheerful. Lovely staff. Tiny room but it's at a great location to get the A-Line ferry that leaves early in the morning and the ferry terminal is a literal stones throw away.

Very cute little sharehouse in the center of Kagoshima! The staff was very friendly and cleaned everything regularly! I was in a female only room and I felt comfortable. Washing machine was for free! Drier was 300 Yen, but that is pretty normal everywhere in Japan. I met a lot of interesting and fun people. The hostel had a shared kitchen and living room so in the evening we could sit together and meet new people! It felt very cozy!
Big room, cheap, clean, modern and many amenities like toothbrushes and laundry detergent for the laundry machine. Great location, 5 minute walk from Kagoshima-chuo station. Wonderful beds!! Easy check-in and check-out on tablet.
The staff are genuinely interesting in making your stay as pleasant as possible. I highly recommend Meedafus as one of the best hostel I have ever stayed at. Excellent coffee and Wi-Fi speeds too.
