Faded art deco hotel in a great location, at the foot of the main pedestrian street separating the lower and upper town. The hotel has a lot of charm. Very nice staff, breakfast was good, room service for extra 5 euros. We could leave our luggage the day of checkout at no extra cost, which, given the heat and the steep climbing, was a life saver. Very good restaurant with a big but intimate terrace right behind the hotel (not part of the hotel, but handy if you don't feel like walking any further).A few minutes walk from the train station.

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.
The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.
The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.
The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.
Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.
The tour train was an excellent introduction to Coimbra.
The tour train was an excellent introduction to Coimbra. It highlighted the 'must see' attractions. The night tour of the University and Library is fascinating, especially for those that enjoy university traditions and general history. The mini-city is also an informative yet fun experience, it displays the various architectures of Portugal through the ages. The boat trips are disappointing - I feel more could be done to improve the experience.

There for a compition. Nice city.
There for a compition. Nice city. Nice resturants (most seem to want non-locals to pay with cash ....seems that's how it is). Spent most of the time in competition venue in ricer side gardens area (by the foot bridge). Had a wander round old city. Quant narriw (and steep) streets, juxtaposed with wide open spaces. The botenanical gardens (A mini Kew Gardens), part of university, were loverly, and on a hot sunny day, a nice break from the sun.

The town is beautiful.
The town is beautiful. We did the tour of the university and the fado concert and both were outstanding. The people were really nice and the town is both quaint and inviting. I loved it more than the bigger cities of Porto and Lisbon. I guess it depends on what you like, but I found it to be a wonderful place to visit.
Be prepared to walk up some steep hills. Not as slippery as Lisbon, but just as challenging. And still, really worth the hike up to the university area...
The Convento de Santa Clara a Nova is a real gem on the opposite side of the river, close to where we stayed. The tour was fascinating and the views also were spectacular. No other tourists were there when we visited, and we were able to get a private tour from one of the guides. We really enjoyed it immensely.

I had never heard of Coimbra, only went to watch the European Triathlon Championships to support my daughter and partner. What a beautiful town it is. At first it looks a bit run down, there is regeneration going on by the river. It had a real charm to it, a university town steeped in history at the top of the old town. Didn't realise it was the capital in the 12th century! Lovely cafe's in tiny squares with delicious food and drink at a very reasonable price. The people of Coimbra were so friendly and helpful. Fell in love with Porto Tonica! (a long drink of white port, tonic water). Worth a visit for a long weekend.

This is a beautiful city with some stunning architecture.
This is a beautiful city with some stunning architecture. Lovely streets, safe friendly and very clean. Restaurants were varied and some of the traditional Portuguese were very good value and tasty. Local wines are good.
The people are very respectful, kind and polite. A very special p,ace to visit
Good location for a family as quiet and just round the corner from a supermarket. For kids it was a little way away from the centre of Coimbra, although ideally located for Portugal dos Pequenitos (Portugal for the Little Ones) which our children could have spent all day at. Really good value for the money and served us well
The owners were some of the most genuine and generous people we’ve met in Portugal. This place exceeded all expectations and was a true haven. Each little detail had been seen too and was done with humanity in mind, not just the paint by numbers tourist accommodation but an exquisite homely experience.
Great location to old town. The apartments work in partnership with Hotel Oslo, which is just around the corner. Hotel Oslo have a great rooftop bar to sit and watch the sunset. Apartment has kitchen with two hot plates and a microwave. There is secure parking 50m away for €10 a day.
The charm and history of the building, the restaurant (one of the best in the region), the pool, and last but not least the staff. While hospitality is very good in Portugal, the team of Quinta das Lagrimas was simply the best on my trip. SO kind, helpful and professional. Bravo!
