Besides the obvious attractions like 1000 y.o. Drzwi Gnieznienskie and History Museum, the trail of fun rabbit monuments all around the Old Town and lakes, there are some mor gems here to justify 2-3 day stay.
We enjoyed open summer pools in the city with kids and an evening in a local brewery - both easily discoverable on google maps.
Nearby (20 min drive or 15 train ride plus 1h walk) there's an opportunity for a whole day excursion to Ostrow Lednicki. It's an island reachable by short ferry ride where a Gród (a medieval Slavonic fortified settlement) remains can be found an a trail through different historic exhibits. It can take you anywhere form an hour to half day depending on your patience, walking tempo and interests. Theres also a great karczma (traditional restaurant) need by and a couple of small beaches to enjoy the lake.

Must have to visit - Catherdal!
Must have to visit - Catherdal! And for sure to climb at the top for the amazing view. Attn- no elevator and the stairs are steep. Best place to park is by the Carhedral Parking. You’ll get to the Cathedral from there through the nicest restaurant in the park. Few steps away- huge lake. Highly recommended!

It's only a small town but does have some good walking trails - especially to see the rabbit statues. It's really good to follow these individual characters who lead you to all the main historical sites of the town.
A good selection of places to eat and drink.
The train station is only about 10 minutes walk into the centre.

Apparently, Gniezno was the original capital of Poland...!
Apparently, Gniezno was the original capital of Poland...!
There are loads of churches/Cathedrals with lots of history, various landmarks, historic statues etc. and we toured and climbed the Bazylika Prymasowska Tower, which attracts many visitors - it's got huge history and tours can be had in various languages, at a cost. That and the diocese museum is the main attraction.
I imagine the square is very lively in season but tbh was pretty empty at the end of Sept. except for a marching band on Saturday. That said there were loads of restaurants with outside seating (which they were packing away for winter).
It was ok for our purposes and filled a couple of quiet days. Once is enough though. Only trains from Poznan to Gniezno, cheap but watch your timing..
