Martinborough is the jewel in the crown of the Deep South of the North Island of NZ. It is a beautiful quaint rural town which is ideal to visit if you want a peaceful retreat amongst vineyards, wineries, fabulous restaurants and a thriving cafe culture.
I highly recommend visits to Cape Palliser Lighthouse and Seal Colony followed by Lake Ferry then back to Nga Waka for wine tasting and superb pizza lunch.
Nara Cafe is the go-too for coffee full stop.
A stay at the Wine Shed polishes the experience perfectly.
We'll be back!

Unfortunately the hotel did not meet expectations. The floor slooped badly in the bedroom and we both experienced a sense of dizzy spells. We both snubbed our toes on the uneven floor between the bedroom and bathroom. We considered the bath dangerious as it was slipperly and no hand rails. Staff were rather unfriendly. We paid what was to us a lot of money for our wedding anniversary night and didnt enjoy the hotel at all . Always wanted to stay there but would not again and would not recommend it.

The vineyards are the main attraction for going to Martinborough. There are numerous offerings and are within easy walking or biking distance of each other. Cellar door tastings are readily available at a wide variety of vineyards, from smaller family vineyards, to the more sophisticated offerings. Muirlea Rise is an example we tried of the former, and Ata Rangi for the latter. Both were really good in their very distinct offerings. Poppies Vineyard is a really good lunch option. Martinborough's weather is typically really good - that's partly why the vineyards are there.

You need to go to Poppies Winery, book a wine tasting!
You need to go to Poppies Winery, book a wine tasting! Not only is the wine delicious but the service is superb. You get to learn heaps about how wine is make, the decisions made by the wine maker and what makes of the wine from Poppies special.
HIGHLY recommend Tirohana Estate. We were well looked after when we went for a wine tasting by a lovely gentleman who made the experience very special. He had great charisma and was passionate about wine, we learnt lots!
We went to little square pizza for dinner and they looked after us very well, and provided the MOST divine range of pizzas. Everyone was happy, and they also cater for Vegans too!
Stayed here for a night and the apartment unit I was in was expertly furnished. Amazing kitchen, living room, dining table area. There was parking right in front of the unit, good bathroom facilities as well. There is a sheet with tons of information on the motel itself, services in the surrounding area, and amenities which pretty much covered everything I needed. Only a 2 minute drive from Martinborough center where there are plenty of bars, restaurants, and stores.
We loved the location on a Lifestyle Block. It was so quiet and restful. Our hosts were great in making sure we had everything we needed and then leaving us alone to enjoy the unit and the company of the dogs if we wanted to. it was just a couple of minutes drive to town and about 5 minutes to the wedding venue we were in Martinborough for. Enjoyed our stay so much we asked and stayed for an extra night !
Close to Martinborough township, so everything was walking distance. We had a nice stroll through the town from the house. We were attending a wedding in featherston which was only a 14minute drive away too. Kitchen and living area had what we needed for our weekend with some games that were available to use. The second toilet was a great addition and came in handy with 5 adults. WiFi was also available.
Lovely house in a good location. Lots of space and facilities. Really nice of the hosts to provide all the extras (breakfast items, chocs, chilled water, wine etc). Loved sitting in the garden in the late afternoon. Some cellar doors within walking distance (recommend Margrain), and Martinborough brewery - which is only a couple of streets away. Comfy bed and good shower. We plan to return!
Excellent resort and apartment - modern and spacious, very clean, nice outlook, great facilities. Bed was very comfortable. Bistro was excellent for breakfast, lovely staff and we had a very nice dinner - closer to fine dining than typical bistro, great service. Close to everything in Martinborough and within reasonable walking distance. Overall great value for money.
Beautifil wee paradise in Martinborough with everything you need for a lovely stay. We enjoyed meeting Darryl and Claire and their beautiful dogs. Only a 5 min ride away from the centre. It was super cozy and comfortable and we absolutely enjoyed our stay.
Brilliant location - was located within easy walking distance of Martinborough shops, wineries, cafes, cinema etc. Very quiet at night. Very comfortable bed. Netflix was freely available. Cozy and warm during a stormy / wet long weekend.
Really great property, spacious and warm for Winter stay. Walking distance to Martinborough and nice facilities available at Pinot Grove. Easy check in and timely communication from property team. Would recommend.
Location was beautiful, especially in the mornings waking up practically on the vineyard with such nice weather! Staff was so friendly and lovely, good vibes. Wasn’t too far away from Martinborough square either.
Location was excellent, within walking distance of the main eateries and shops.
Quiet neighbourhood was very appealing.
Used Martinborough as a central point for 3 days of viewing the surrounding townships.
clean and tidy, friendly and helpful receptionist.
beautiful hotel, had to change to a twin room which was easy enough when called hotel and spoke to nice lady on the phone day before we arrived.
This was the only accommodation in Martinborough available for the night we wanted to stay and for that I am very grateful. Good location in the main township. Walking distance to the Square
Beautiful holiday park, everything you need for short stay. Property is super close walk to Martinborough township and nearby wineries, Cape Palliser, Lake Ferry etc.
Colin and Gayle are lovely hosts and always make our stay enjoyable! The hotel is nicely located just a block away from the center of activity in town.
