Kaikoura is an extremely beautiful part of Aotearoa with a lot of activities to do. Our favourites include: - The Dolphin Experience - particularly exciting if you get in for a swim with the dolphins - local walks and photography opportunities - visit the seal colonies (they're especially interesting when the babies are playing in the water) - forage for food on the coast (get a copy of the Foraging book by Peter Langlands) - cooking classes and supper club at Hapuku Kitchen - at the other end of the culinary scale a meal at Donegal House is fun (a real Irish pub in the countryside) - check out the amazing BBQ seafood food truck on the road out to the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway for some fresh kai moana - visit to Fyffe House to learn about the early whalers - visit the museum to learn about the earthquake An enthusiastic group of locals are taking steps to acquiring dark sky sanctuary status for Kaikoura and there are many great places to see the stars - locations are well signposted around the town and they have monthly events you can join in to learn about the stars and astrophotography. Spend at least a couple of days exploring, as there's plenty to do and see here.

Location was perfect for walking to the Seal Colony along the path and the beach . The front Desk hours were very limited and the breakfast left a bit to be desired . But the location and the quaint courtyard make up for its downfalls.

Enjoyed the whale watching tour - the day was reasonably calm so no one was seasick thank goodness. Staff were informatiive and shared the story of the whales and dolphins. The map showing us the travel route was very helpful to understand the trnech and which direction and area we were headed to.

Kaikoura is a 2 hr drive from our home, so we regularly visit for long weekends. It's a special part of NZ where people and nature can interact. There's something special about how the mountains meet the sea. And of course the fresh seafood is spectacular

    WhaleWatch trip was very good.

WhaleWatch trip was very good. Great cafes: Flo and Co has excellent coffee. Sime's Kitchen had great breakfast and lunch - vegan choices were delicious. Tipsy Foodies also recommended. Southern Paua shop and factory highly recommended - amazing range of jewellery, carvings and gifts. Some exquisite pounamu too. Best place to buy gifts in Kaikoura!! Novel Findings is a great bookshop and homewares shop - don't miss it! Loved the Ngāi Tahu artworks beside the highway, murals on the railway bridge and buildings. It's really worth checking the "Neat Places Kaikoura" website - lots of great suggestions for cool places and things to do in Kaikoura.

The wild life was definitely the highlight of the trip for me. I went swimming with dolphins and saw load of seals with their pups. Also the people in the town are super friendly and helpful. Of course the scenery is also breathtaking. Loads of nice eating places that serve great seafood.

Toilet was surprisingly in pristine condition, considering that a lot of these motels or similar can be quite old. Ceiling heater in toilet was so warm and nice because it was the first we saw on the trip, but subsequently realised that was quite a common heater. Stayed in cosy 1 bedroom apartment, with a small kitchen for me to prep breakfast for next day when we head off! A pity it was just for a 1night stay, since it was a stopover betweenPicton ferry terminal and Lake tekapo. but was definitely a good 1 night short stay!

This is a home for the elderly or disabled. The lady running it didn’t seem to understand what to do. No WiFi and despite me asking again the lady running the place had no clue how to resolve the problem. In the end we didn’t stay, we moved to another hotel, that is how poor it was. It states that the hotel is in Kaikoura, it is NOT, it is several kilometers away n the middle of a residential area. We were VERY dissatisfied.

While we just needed to be here so that we could get on an earlier whale watching cruise the next day, the property that all of our needs, and we would definitely consider another stay. our room had of sliding glass door, overlooking the bay, with a small table and chairs for outdoor dining. The property is away from downtown Kaikoura, so it was very quiet and very relaxing.

Lovely upstairs rom with a mountain and sea view. The room is basic, just space for the bed and a central heating radiator but for $68 won't find better in Kaikouora. Communal Kitchen and dining area are excellent, large and clean. Couple of settees too. 5 minute walk into Kaikoura centre, Westend. Paid cash for the room, no credit card rip offs, nice.

Great location and value in Kaikoura, and bonus to have private parking (although only 4 spaces available!) A really nice seating area outside, perfect for a nice weather evening/morning. Lady at reception was friendly, and there were lots of leaflets with suggested activities to help decide how to enjoy our stay in the area.

This is a really nice, modern hotel, very close to the main things to do in Kaikoura. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the staff are very helpful. If you’re doing the swimming with dolphins experience during your stay, the hotel is over the road from the meeting place. This made the early start a lot easier!

A hotel with tradition and character. Even when a bit old fashioned it offers good comfort (for example breakfast on the old balcony with view over the Kaikoura Bay and the mountain range. Very good restaurant, especially for fish and seafood.
