We loved everything. The place is so beautiful and located on the Nakasendo. The little neighbourhood is very cute. The garden was a magic touch. The beds were very comfortable. Although breakfast at the cafe was delicious. We loved our stay. My daughter said that it was her dream house.

staff always helpful with questions about using facilities or about the surrounding area. I appreciated getting a dorm bed that faced mountain views out the window.

Yuki & Ken are the most wholesome host-couple: kind, helpful & funny. They will make sure that you feel welcome and point you towards the must sees along the nakasendo trail. You will reside in the heart of Magome - perfect to enjoy the village without the crowds in the morning and evening + perfect to do the hike to Tsumago.
The inn was newly opened, everything feels in order and thought through: stylish while feeling quite traditional. We loved the tatami mats and futon, in which we slept very well (pyjamas are provided). We were a bit concerned about the „shared bathroom“ before arriving but with 3 toilets and 3 shower/bath rooms (all very clean) for 4 rooms it wasn‘t an issue at all.
Breakfast (toast, scrambled eggs, joghurt, fruits) and dinner (curry, salad, soup, tempura) were simple and delicious - most of the ingredients come from their own rice fields / gardens (try the selfmade plum wine).
Located within 8.5 km of Toson Memorial Museum and 8.5 km of Magome Wakihonjin Museum, The RYOKAN O features rooms with air conditioning and a shared bathroom in Nakatsugawa.

Location, shared spaces beautiful, large comfy rooms.
We planned to do the Nakasendo Trail. We took a train to Nagiso and walked the 23kms back on the trail. Easy to follow trail and relatively quiet out of the main villages. Note! IC card doesn’t work. Buy a separate ticket for the trip.
We found restaurants hard to find but up at the supermarket we used a great little place. Staff didn’t speak English but with a screen to order and Google translate, we had a great meal cooked to order.

The location is actually in Magome, a very small mountain town outside of Nakatsigawa. The views are incredible and the town is very nice.. small shops and old style buildings. And from there you can hike to Tsumago and beyond. Highly recommend

Definitely a step back in time to the Edo period trail system through the Kiso valley. A glimpse into village life in Japan. The builder and shops were so authentic and peaceful.
The Nakasendo trail was blocks away to hike to Tsumago. Standing near the waterfalls where Myamato Musashi trained was a gift.
An epic part of Japan.

Getting to our ryokan was a simple bus ride to the town from the train station. We were graciously greeted by the host of the ryokan. Delicious traditional dinner with many small dishes, all prepared with care. We started our hike early from Magome to Tsuamgo without many tourists which was a plus to take in the tranquility of the trail. The waterfalls along the way were impactful. Stopped for lunch in Tsumago and had cold soba with grilled fish, simple but delicious.
If you decide to take the bus back to Magome in the late afternoon, be prepared to wait, there may be a line and the bus only runs every half hour, depending on the day.

We stayed in Nakatsugawa in order to spend time walking on the Nakasendo Trail. It was a good home base for doing so!
It’s possible to take a cab or a bus to the post towns to start your walk, or to end it.
Nakatsugawa is also known for its abundant chestnut snacks and sweets which we sampled and truly enjoyed.
It was really nice to be in a part of Japan that has fewer tourists and is more quiet.

This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa.
This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa. Frankly whilst it's quaint, picturesque and reasonably true to form it's frankly a bit of a tourist trap and quite crowded. The buildings are almost all souvenir shops or restaurant / tea houses. With a few exceptions many are selling the same stuff, usually at higher prices than can be bought elsewhere. Glad we went but won't return

Very well presented rooms and property in the heart of this beautiful historical post town. The view out of the back window of room to the trees was sublime. The guesthouse host was very responsive and arranged for us to have a meal at one of the towns few restaurants, Haginoya, with a traditional Japanese degustation, easily the most memorable culinary experience we had.
Location and general interior/facilities/room of the hotel were all fantastic. Staff were friendly and I liked that you didn't wear shoes inside the hotel it felt very clean and comfortable. The complimentary coffee was also very good.
Walking distance from the Nakatsugawa train station. Great little bar in the hotel (and a free drink!) with friendly staff. Bathrooms and general hotel very clean! Great access to Magome and other beautiful hiking areas
