The room is very small. At an outskirt like this, you would have imagined a bigger space room. At the same price, I paid for a room in Kyoto and Osaka was bigger.

Incredible location, the guesthouse is small (only a few rooms) which makes it a very peaceful and relaxing place. The hotel stuff was very helpful, the room was super cozy and clean. Definitely would recommend!

The hotel looks like a beautiful little village for preservation. We slept in a small house that is over 150 years old. The staff is lovely, always looking for ways to help. Dinner and breakfast were works of art.

Lovely property that’s been very tastefully refurbished and a fun way to experience more traditional houses. Assi is very helpful and very generously gave us a lift to Magome for the Nakasendo hike. We also really enjoyed Sakashita - there were some good restaurants and it was great to escape the tourists.

We stayed in Nakatsugawa in order to spend time walking on the Nakasendo Trail. It was a good home base for doing so!
It’s possible to take a cab or a bus to the post towns to start your walk, or to end it.
Nakatsugawa is also known for its abundant chestnut snacks and sweets which we sampled and truly enjoyed.
It was really nice to be in a part of Japan that has fewer tourists and is more quiet.

This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa.
This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa. Frankly whilst it's quaint, picturesque and reasonably true to form it's frankly a bit of a tourist trap and quite crowded. The buildings are almost all souvenir shops or restaurant / tea houses. With a few exceptions many are selling the same stuff, usually at higher prices than can be bought elsewhere. Glad we went but won't return

As previously reviewed, we are still annoyed that we had to argue at length with the staff (over half an hour) to have the sofa bed made up with linen. Their policy apparently is to only provide linen when there are 3 guests sharing the room advertised as 'Double Bed plus Sofa' and confirmed in writing via booking.com that I had booked a room with 2 beds. The hotel was demanding further payment otherwise my friend and I were expected to share the bed. They eventually agreed to make an exception. The air con unit also only had instructions in Japanese and we found it impossible to turn it down The room was very small and the aircon unit sounded all night as if we were flying in an airplane.

Nakatsugawa was a very pleasant town with an excellent shopping centre and good restaurants. Soba noodle seem to be a specialty in many. It was also a handy base for taking a bus to Magome for the Nakasendo Way walk to Tsumago and in the opposite direction to Ochiai, via the historic stone-paved 800m road.

Our primary reason for visiting was the walk from Magome to Tsumago. It's a lovely outing. Very enriching to see Japanese countryside after the big cities of central Honshu. The quality and restfulness of Iwasu-so was an unexpected delight.

The old town was lovely and came over as very authentic.
The old town was lovely and came over as very authentic. Be prepared to walk about 20 mins from the main station to the historic part of town. The people were lovely. I was there on a VERY rainy Monday and not a lot was open but I did find a wonderful izakaya almost immediately over the road and the food was amazing. Good base for hiking out of Magome- get the early bus to skip the crowds in the trail. Magome won’t be open but by the time you get to the end of the trail there will be a nice Japanese man with hot steamed buns ready for you.
Hotel staff was very receptive and attentive of all my questions via chat.
The hotel is located at the top of the hill in Magome. I recommend traveling light with your luggage.
Facilities are very modern, making it a trendy stay in the old post town. This is a communal setup, so you will be sharing the restroom with other guests.
Laundy machines on site.
Take advantage of the restaurant recommendations the staff provides. I had an amazing gastronomic dinner experience at Haginoya. The Hillbilly cafe is a great spot for breakfast.
located right on the main street of Magome-juku, Magome Chaya is a great place for a nights rest in the historic post town before heading on the way to your next destination. The rooms are clean, japanese style with tatami mats and futons. You have ample space to stretch out, and there are common rooms for you to mingle. I particularly enjoyed watching the sunrise in the morning, when the town is quiet.
The stores close early, but they serve an exceptional dinner in the restaurant (highly recommend).
we stayed here in what has been (and surely will be) the best guesthouse experience of all during our trip to Japan. We instantly fell in love with this beautiful house and its calming serene atmosphere. The kitchen is well equipped and the futon beds and bedding were cosy and warm. Atsushi, the owner, was lovely to talk to and introduced us to his collection of japanese and international music. highly recommended!!
Loved the bright zen calm cosy design and ambience. Great lounge areas. Tatami room was all setup...spacious and clean. There was a ladies bathroom (2 showers) with private areas to get dressed. Close to station, local coffee place, great unagi restaurant and Valor supermarket and Starbucks. The front desk lady was super helpful and friendly. She recommended me a nice onsen too (Nakatsugawa Onsen Yubunesawa)
This is similar to a homestay accommodation. We had much more room than expected for just 2 of us. Our host was welcoming and gave us a thorough tour of the unit. It was a special experience to stay overnight in the pretty town of Magome. The 2 level unit is conveniently located. There was food available for purchase in the fridge and cabinets which was handy in a town with few grocery options.
traditional Japanese house exceptionally well maintained with excellent facilities. On-site Osen was a real treat and perfect for end of day before dinner. fact that they provided yokata and helped was a special touch. if that wasn’t enough, the host cooled an amazing Michelin-style meal with local dishes we have never tried elsewhere. unforgettable five star experience!
What a fantastic stay we had!!! Keiko is a fantastic host, who cooks like a dream. Our favourite stay of our 3 weeks in Japan. The room we had was spacious and spotless. We walked to Tsumago and got the bus back so stayed 2 nights rather than doing baggage transfer. Use Nakatsugawa train station and get the bus to Magome Cannot recommend this place enough.
Beautiful hotel in a beautiful part of the town, right on the Nakasendo Trail. Convenient parking. So much charm and character and the staff were lovely and super helpful. Dinner and breakfast were both amazing - definitely recommend getting these! Very comfy futon and pillow, decent sizeroom with large cupboard for bags.
The place is fairly convenient. The room is clean and comfortable with all the amenities required for a short stay. Very polite and helpful staff, not to mention that the food is really nice! It comes with a complimentary breakfast but I had my dinner at the hotel as well and it was great.
A spacious and beautifully decorated Japanese-style room. Meals at the level of Michelin stars. The food is delicious to the mouth and to the eyes as well. A welcoming hostess. Breathtaking view. What else does a person need to have fun? We really enjoyed staying here.
The traditional Japanese guesthouse experience was unique and special. The set meals were phenomenal. The staff was terrific. The owner performed a traditional samurai song and dance after dinner that was great. Location is right on the main street of the town.
Well looked after. A business style hotel, but, as a foreign tourist visiting over new year, the staff made sure I had what I needed to do some hiking and where to eat. The onsen, a daily ritual for many domestic visitors, was a treat. Helpful and kind.
Incredible location, the guesthouse is small (only a few rooms) which makes it a very peaceful and relaxing place. The hotel stuff was very helpful, the room was super cozy and clean. Definitely would recommend!
we loved this place, old building in beautiful old part of town, solo occupancy, living room with outlook over koi pond, good supermarket a few blocks away, great restaurant across the road.
Our host was very accommodating, he helped us make a booking for dinner and also drove a friend who was staying elsewhere back to his hotel for a small fee - that was really appreciated.
The hotel had a calm, welcoming ambience. Windows in the room could be opened. Onsen was wonderful. Breakfast was lovely range of Japanese dishes and a few European type foods.
