Halfway between a compact and modern business hotel and a ryokan experience! Barefoot hotel, hence interesting experience for kids. Western breakfast items on the buffet was helpful for us as vegetarians travelling with 2 children. All modern amenities avbl. Has a "bathhouse" if you want the experience. Excellent choice for exploring the Nakasendo trail.

It was in an old town. Peaceful and quiet. The house itself was unique as it operates as a cafe during the day.

I really enjoyed our stay at Magome. We hired a car and drove from Tokyo to Osaka via the mountains, and decided to stay here as a one-night stay. I really wish we stayed longer. The staff are really friendly, and when we were there, it was super quiet and relaxing. The view of the mountain ranges from the window was really cool. The repurposed school is a funky idea, but the reality was an incredibly spacious stay (especially for Japan standards), and incredibly homely vibes. Big, wide hallways and creature comforts. A real communal feeling. We stayed in the twin bedroom as we're a family, and we were really happy with it.
I'll also mention how friendly the staff were. They really enjoyed hanging out with us and interacting with our 2-year old. They even sat and did origami with us until late at night.

Loved my stay at the Ryokan O. It felt like an authentic Ryokan, but with soundproof rooms, I didn't hear the other guests at all. The shared bathrooms were immaculately clean. Staff are friendly, and there's a lovely reception area to hang out in. The location is extremely convenient, close to bus stop and train station.

Getting to our ryokan was a simple bus ride to the town from the train station. We were graciously greeted by the host of the ryokan. Delicious traditional dinner with many small dishes, all prepared with care. We started our hike early from Magome to Tsuamgo without many tourists which was a plus to take in the tranquility of the trail. The waterfalls along the way were impactful. Stopped for lunch in Tsumago and had cold soba with grilled fish, simple but delicious.
If you decide to take the bus back to Magome in the late afternoon, be prepared to wait, there may be a line and the bus only runs every half hour, depending on the day.

We stayed in Nakatsugawa in order to spend time walking on the Nakasendo Trail. It was a good home base for doing so!
It’s possible to take a cab or a bus to the post towns to start your walk, or to end it.
Nakatsugawa is also known for its abundant chestnut snacks and sweets which we sampled and truly enjoyed.
It was really nice to be in a part of Japan that has fewer tourists and is more quiet.

This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa.
This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa. Frankly whilst it's quaint, picturesque and reasonably true to form it's frankly a bit of a tourist trap and quite crowded. The buildings are almost all souvenir shops or restaurant / tea houses. With a few exceptions many are selling the same stuff, usually at higher prices than can be bought elsewhere. Glad we went but won't return

As previously reviewed, we are still annoyed that we had to argue at length with the staff (over half an hour) to have the sofa bed made up with linen. Their policy apparently is to only provide linen when there are 3 guests sharing the room advertised as 'Double Bed plus Sofa' and confirmed in writing via booking.com that I had booked a room with 2 beds. The hotel was demanding further payment otherwise my friend and I were expected to share the bed. They eventually agreed to make an exception. The air con unit also only had instructions in Japanese and we found it impossible to turn it down The room was very small and the aircon unit sounded all night as if we were flying in an airplane.

Nakatsugawa was a very pleasant town with an excellent shopping centre and good restaurants. Soba noodle seem to be a specialty in many. It was also a handy base for taking a bus to Magome for the Nakasendo Way walk to Tsumago and in the opposite direction to Ochiai, via the historic stone-paved 800m road.

Our primary reason for visiting was the walk from Magome to Tsumago. It's a lovely outing. Very enriching to see Japanese countryside after the big cities of central Honshu. The quality and restfulness of Iwasu-so was an unexpected delight.
Front desk is superb. They have nicely folded origami to give out to little children - and my daughter was delighted! The rooms were nice and clean. We have two non-connected rooms, but as it was the peak travel season, we were glad we found a nice hotel like this one. Its location was also excellent. If you stay here, you must eat at the Prince Matsuba, Nakatsugawa - just opposite the hotel! During my entire stay in Chubu, this restaurant provides the best food at the most reasonable price and great servings.
we stayed here in what has been (and surely will be) the best guesthouse experience of all during our trip to Japan. We instantly fell in love with this beautiful house and its calming serene atmosphere. The kitchen is well equipped and the futon beds and bedding were cosy and warm. Atsushi, the owner, was lovely to talk to and introduced us to his collection of japanese and international music. highly recommended!!
The accomodation was simple as I expected of an old style Japanese guest house. Which of course means that you need to go in understanding that the bedding is a futon so not the best nights sleep. Ok for one night and really, the location and town make up for that. So beautiful. Also the staff are just lovely and helpful. Highlight was the dinner and breakfast. Top quality!
Guesthouse located in the heart of Magome’s historic old town. Easy to get to (by bus or taxi) from Nagatsugawa Station. Kento is a very kind host and was always available if needed; he took his time showing me the entire guesthouse. Meals not included but Kento booked me a kaiseki dinner at Haginoya (5 min walk from guesthouse) and the entire meal was top quality!
What a fantastic stay we had!!! Keiko is a fantastic host, who cooks like a dream. Our favourite stay of our 3 weeks in Japan. The room we had was spacious and spotless. We walked to Tsumago and got the bus back so stayed 2 nights rather than doing baggage transfer. Use Nakatsugawa train station and get the bus to Magome Cannot recommend this place enough.
The location in Magome was incredible, the meals were incredible, and the owners very kindly changed our reservation to three people on the spot after I mistakenly booked for two! We loved our stay and would love to go back. Also - we were traveling with one vegetarian who was well fed at dinner and breakfast - this was sometimes hard to find in Japan.
It’s in a good overnight location for doing the Magome to Tsumago walk, particularly if you have a car and can make your own way to either town to start the walk. Our room included a private shower and toilet and it was clean. The beds were comfortable and the very good breakfasts included western as well as traditional Japanese options.
Beautiful hotel in a beautiful part of the town, right on the Nakasendo Trail. Convenient parking. So much charm and character and the staff were lovely and super helpful. Dinner and breakfast were both amazing - definitely recommend getting these! Very comfy futon and pillow, decent sizeroom with large cupboard for bags.
The guesthouse is a great basecamp or rest stop along the Nakasendo. The host’s communication was on point and they were very helpful in arranging dinner reservations. The views from the rooms are magnificent and the town setting is also super beautiful. Hope to come back one day.
The hotel looks like a beautiful little village for preservation. We slept in a small house that is over 150 years old. The staff is lovely, always looking for ways to help. Dinner and breakfast were works of art.
Incredible location, the guesthouse is small (only a few rooms) which makes it a very peaceful and relaxing place. The hotel stuff was very helpful, the room was super cozy and clean. Definitely would recommend!
I love this hotel and it's atmosphere. It is clean and no shoes policy as you enter. Breakfast is excellent and complimentary teas and coffee plus basic toiletries a plus! Would definitely recommend this hotel
Bright new hotel in good location. The architecture, appearance, and amenities are great. Breakfast was pleasant (Japanese style food). The front desk staff were fine and helpful.
Fantastic beds - really comfortable. Got a great night’s sleep. Water pressure in the showers was also really good. Large amount of space in the room, very unusual for Japan.
The house was a beautiful traditional Japanese style, which was only eclipsed by how amazing the staff was. This was my favorite experience of my time in Japan.
