An interesting city that we were using for a stop off point from Lecce. The city is by the water with an old castle and a fishing industry. There is also a steel mill and a lot of cargo ships in the bay. There is an old town but it is mostly abandon from the 1970’s so doesn’t compare at all to old towns in other Italian cities. Work underway to rejuvenate the old town and waterfront but seems to be very slow and will take 10-20 years. We caught the train to Taranto from Brindisi but found it difficult to get one to Amalfi so ended up catching a bus (which worked well). In summary, if your in the area spend a couple of days but don’t plan a special trip to Taranto.

Having visited the lagoon and port area there is the ancient city to see, finally the must is the archeological museum. The marked is down-town, the fishermen do their job and you will find all you need near-by. With the 5-day abonnement of the railway there is an alternative to the car-rental.

Restaurants seem to be closed on Mondays.
Restaurants seem to be closed on Mondays. The old town is not really what you would expect. Almost no bars, restaurants or coffee shops.
Better to stroll along the newer parts of the city. Plenty of shops and places for an espresso or dinner. If you have a car: drive south along the coast (30-60 minutes) and you will find plenty of beaches with white sand and excellent clear water to swim and play in....

For me Taranto is the best city in Puglia, it has absolutely everything, city on 2 seas (Citta dei due mare) city life and beach life combined. It has the most beautiful castle, and Citta Vecchia where the cathedral San Cataldo has to be seen to be believed. Lots of beautiful churches, a museum full of wonderful gold and antiques. Always a buzz in the city with lots to do, and you are so close to stunning beaches too, a short drive away. You also have to taste a Spritz, and a panzerotto (watch though you don't burn your mouth)

It was an interesting city for one time visit.
It was an interesting city for one time visit. The waitresses were rude in the Irish pub, another Italian restaurant was told that all table are reserved in spite of the place was absolutely empty. There weren't bars except for one on the seaside boulevard but that was good. To find parkplace is a big challenge but we were lucky and we always found which generally took 5-10 minuits.
We were in Taranto for 5 nights. Thanks to the accommodation, it was a nice 5 days. The accommodation is very pleasant and bright. It has everything you need to stay for several days. Our apartment was on the ground floor and we had the privilege of using the large terrace. We were most impressed by the cleanliness of the building, in fact, from the very dirty streets of Taranto, you enter another world. The host was available for all inquiries, we would definitely stay there again.
The hosts are a very sweet elderly couple (compared to me). I was in communication with their daughter via whatsapp as we were travelling by train from Rome to Taranto. We had a little trouble communicating but the Google Translate app helped along with hand gestures. The place is very quaint and peaceful. The window/balcony opens to a view of the port! The evening breeze was amazing. With 3 restaurants right outside, your options are unlimited for a 2-3 days stay!
The apartment is very well thought of. The location and orientation are carefully picked by the architect host, Domenico for someone who doesn't have to be at the center of Taranto all the time.
The interior is modern and elegant and all furniture, and decorations are of high aesthetics. Of course, all were clean and organized.
Internet was working fine and its speed was adequate.
A private parking spot at a closed parking is reserved for Casa di Ro guests.
I had a wonderful stay at Alinella’s place. The host was incredible. A very early check-in was possible. She invited me to join a lunch, that one of her neighbours prepared. The place is located in the old town of Taranto, at a very small street. I did know almost nothing about Taranto, before I arrived. I liked the city very much and I would love to come to Taranto again one day. A huge thank you to Alinella!
I was delighted with my stay at Palazzo Saraceno. The flat decorated with great taste, very quiet and very spacious. I will definitely return there. Rosella is extremely helpful - she even took me to the bus station 10 km away. The flat is very close to the main attractions in Taranto.
The owners have done a great job renovating this place as it is located in the old town Taranto but within walking distance to the newer part of the city. parking is free around the building. the old town is being re-built which is great. They do have an elevator which is also great.
The best place to stay in Taranto! The view is one of the most beautiful and inspiring things I've ever seen! Also Amanda's reception and availability for everything I needed and the proximity to the center only supports when saying that this is the best place.
The hotel rooms are modernly equipped. Rooms are clean thoroughly daily. The view from the window is enchanting. Hotel staff are really very professional, people who are always willing to help. Accommodation 10 out of 10, would definitely repeat. I recommend!!
The apartment is beautiful, a completely renovated property inside a very old building in historic Taranto. Our host was lovely and allowed us to store our luggage in the apartment after checkout because we had a late train.
Small hotel located on the bustling square in the old part of Taranto. Comfortable & clean. Great service from Fabio who helped with the parking and plenty of tips about what to see/do in Taranto and surrounds.
Very friendly and helpful owner, nice apartment, well-equipped kitchen, wifi and TV, all very clean. The city of Taranto is not very inviting (for tourists), but I would recommend the apartment to everyone.
It is fantastic to have a view on the sea.
Room is spacious. Bed is comfy.
Staff was nice.
We could leave our luggage in the hotel after checkout, which was a great help.

Lovely pool and family that ran the hotel were so polite and kind.
The host upgraded our room without any extra charge. Comfortable and extremely clean.
