Hodson Bay Hotel, hotel in Athlone

This luxurious AA 4-star hotel is a haven of peace and quiet, on the beautiful shores of Lough Ree, by Athlone Golf Course.

The rooms were lovely and lovely view of the bay. It was our last day of a 2 week road trip so we didn’t venture out of the hotel much.

We chosed Athlone as a scale to the west.

We chosed Athlone as a scale to the west. And we actually liked the town more than a hyper-touristic city like Galway. It has the right size to park your car and walk to restaurants. The castle and the river and its streets are quite nice and clean.

    The town has great character.

The town has great character. Lots of great pubs and restaurants. Gertie Brown's being one of the best and of course Sean s bar!! The people are so friendly and nice. The drinks not over priced ,like in many other towns around Ireland! We will definitely be back and will look forward to our next visit .

We had a problem with the 'M6' unfortunately we exited much too early at exit 8 instead of continuing to exit 12. When we re-entered the M6 we were then travelling in the wrong direction!! but we eventually found our bearings.

The ease of getting around the Town was amazing.

The ease of getting around the Town was amazing. Their Shopping Centre was class, one of the best I’ve seen, especially for a small Town, it had everything in it. There was a real buzz around the Town. Now I have to say that new Bridge from the Radisson Blu to the Old Town was amazing and so easy to get around. I was also able to get some lovely photos from the Bridge on both sides, a dream location for a novice Photographer. I will certainly be back with my Camera for more opportunities, which there are plenty of in Athlone.

Accommodation was spotlessly clean and mostly very well kitted out. Even has outside power to charge my electric car overnight. Perfect for what we wanted as attending a function in a nearby hotel. A little remote but still only 10 mins from Athlone. Our host was very friendly and helpful. He even offered to drive us to our venue. I left my Kindle reader behind and he even offered to drive halfway to return it, a 100klm round trip!. Exceptional attitude.

At ten minutes walking distance from Athlone town centre and the train station, we got a full-sized 2-bedroom 1.5 bathroom appartment with all ameneties and well-equipped kitchen, all much bigger than we've had before when booking a self-catering appartment. We only stayed one night, so it was a pity we couldn't really enjoy it completely; this would be an ideal starting place if you want to explore this part of Ireland for several days.
