People of Creta are famous by their hoispitality. This is also my experience. I've found quite a lot nervous and impatient local people in Agios Nikolaos (who seemed to be annoyed by tourists), much more than in any other place on Crete by now (it is my 5th visit of Crete). Not all are like this, of course.
Agios Nikolaos in a very nice city otherwise. But, for me it was not a pure pleasure, and I've realized I'm very happy actually when back in our appartment a few kilometers out of Agios Nikolaos (didn't happen to me even in Heraklion or Chania!). It was just sooo relaxing... ;-)

Lovely litte city. Visited in May; understandably the high season will be crowded and overly hot weather.
Usually excellent food, but also worth to try restaurants off the most busy city centre.
By car also worth to explore pebble beaches outside the town which are not crowded at all.

This is a lovely part of Crete, a bit off the beaten path,...
This is a lovely part of Crete, a bit off the beaten path, so it is not marred by the worst aspects of mass tourism, but still affords every convenience for the discerning traveller. The town of Agios Nikolaus is very nice to explore, stretching out over numerous areas including a colorful and lively pedestrian center, long seaside walks in various directions, and lots of shopping streets with bars and restaurants galore. Its unique geographical features mean that you can enjoy, in the center of town, stunning hilltop as well as lakeside and seaside views. As for excursions, Spinalonga Island is a must, along with an afternoon or evening in the nearby village of Kritsa (accessible by bus). There are lots of other places to visit, too, such as Sitia, if you have a car.

I will definitely rent a car. You can't compare the difference between the rent (Feul included)cost to Taxi fees.
Taxi fee from Heraklion to Agios Nicolaos 85 euro ( one way) With 170 Euro, you can Rent a car for many days ( 20Euro per day ) off cours + fuel.
Taxis are just out off line in Greece ( My opinion )
The highlight of this property is the beautiful terrace with a breathtaking view. This apartment was spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean and well appointed. The gated, covered parking was an unexpected bonus. Our hosts were welcoming, helpful and very thoughtful. It was a peaceful quiet location, a bit removed from all the action but walkable to it. The location is a 1 kilometer walk to the lake area and a steep walk down to the beach, 250 steps! This is a lovely place to home base from while visiting Agios Nikolaos.
Everything. From start to finish the staff, specifically Maria was so kind, helpful and knowledgeable. The communication was top notch as well. She helped hire us a driver from the port, made us restaurant reservations, recommended beach clubs and helped us with all of our needs. The hotel itself was a vibe. Super cute decor, perfectly located in town and again, every staff member was so incredibly kind and helpful. I won't ever stay anywhere else when visiting Crete again.
Location is truly fantastic. The reviews did not lie. Beach is down a staircase, taverns and city life booming right around a corner - and yet, you can still enjoy peace and quiet within the hotel. The host is as friendly as it goes, the room and the hotel are clean and even the cheapest room looks taken care off. Towels and sheets are clean and neat. There is hot water and fresh soap (yes, there are hotels nearby where this is not so)
BE VERY CAREFUL of what island you book for through booking.com. We booked this hotel for our holidays believing it was in Zakinthos through booking.com and somehow booking.com booked it in Crete !! And absolutely no response or help with getting refund or even credit for it. We lost over €860 because of it. Very very disappointed with both the hotel response which was 0 when we asked if we could get credit and go next year!!
Beautiful new hotel, spacious apartments, friendly staff, perfect location, a minute's walk from the beach, which is located in a beautiful bay, there are two taverns on the beach where you can have lunch, and 2,5 kilometers away is the beautiful town of Agios Nikolaos.
The hotel has excellent swimming pools and parking, so the holiday was perfect, I will definitely come back again.
Modern apartments with nice decoration and new appliances. Kitchen is well equipped, beds are comfortable and you have everything you need (wine, water, oil, coffee machine with some capsules...). Beds are comfortable and shower also has everything you need.

The absolute highlight of our trip to Crete. Most beautiful hotel, breakfast was perfect, bed was comfortable and the site is just breathtaking. The beach is private and stunning. Perfect for a stay in Agios Nikolaos, you can walk on the boardwalk down to the town. We can't wait to be back.

Nice and quiet guesthouse located very centrally. Agios Nikolaos is after Rethymno my 2nd most favorite city on Crete. Be sure to visit Plaka and Eloundas as they're spectacular locations on the Eastern part of Crete.
The private beach, the friendly staff, the great range of breakfast options, everything is amazing! We were lucky to get a room upgrade and staying at this hotel was the highlight of our trip! Highly recommend.
