Holiday Inn Express York, an IHG Hotel, hotel in York

This hotel is ideally located in a serene and peaceful setting in York, just 2.5 miles from the city centre with free parking and free breakfast.

Limited choice and prone to running out of food, so you could not get your full breakfast without waiting on more food being brought out. Could have done with a choice of eggs rather than scrambled egg every day. The location of the hotel was fine and near a park and ride for getting into York city centre.. The Toby Carvery next to the hotel was not good. The food at the carvery looked as if it had been lying for hours and needed to be replaced with fresh food.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

    We loved visiting York.

We loved visiting York. York Minster was amazing and not overly crowded. I wish I had taken the guided tour, as what I overheard was quite fascinating. Walking through the Shambles (Harry Potter vibes!), the Museum Gardens, the ruins of St. Mary's Abbey and atop the Roman walls was fascinating a well as intriguing. The story behind Shrine to Saint Margaret Clitherow was gruesome. We had great meals at "Trio" and at "Forrest". "The Hole in the Wall" was a quaint pub, but did not deliver on the food. Getting around is easy and there is always something fascinating to see.

York is fabulous so much to see and do most people were helpful and friendly, lovely little cobbled streets and independent shops. Just an amazing city.

Just an amazing city. The lack of traffic in the centre means people just enjoy. The people are so nice, so polite and funny. The food is so good, from fish and chips, never had better, to rather special restaurants. Us old couple felt at home, welcomed. we loved the street entertainers, the market the everything. Do try Nola restaurant, the food is pretty special. The staff are great and even told me the ingredients for one of their dishes. Caused a bit of a row when my husband told me the best ribs he'd ever eaten. Thomas the baker is the best, I am a chef. We took loaves home when we left and BLT rolls to eat on our 6 hour journey which were the best I've ever eaten. The market produce is rather good, the meat stall has a prize winning burger to die for. We bought chutneys from Spice heroes, the mango relish sublime. The flower stall is wickedly good and I returned with some amazing plants. We love York.

York is a great place for many reasons for the traveler or living or university. With fantastic history in its buildings, great restaurants, huge variety of non-chain shops and plenty of the usual shops found in high streets elsewhere. The often overlooked part is the rivers and parkland through which these rivers run. Prone to flooding in time of heavy rain there are interesting systems of civil engineering to be seen. Walks along and around the old city walls and points of viewing from higher up on the Clifford's Tower. On some occasions elements of the walls protection towers are open to the public to see inside. Of special note is the Hi-Fi shop 'The Sound Organisation' which has to be one of the longest standing Hi-Fi shops in the UK. The other shop I love is the The Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas shop, this has to be enjoyed any time of the year with an astounding array of handmade clocks. Once you visit I bet you visit again!

A beautiful historic city - can get a bit crowded with tourists. Great shops and restaurants - The people are super friendly. I loved a couple of shops, The Yorkshire Soap Company, 10 Blake St, York YO1 8QG, An italian restaurant we ate at: La Vecchia Scuola - 62 Low Petergate, York YO1 7HZ, United Kingdom - it's inside a 300 year old former school. Parlormade is a favorite for scones and tea. Probably the best scones I've eaten. ( clotted cream and jam of course) 1 Little, Shambles, York YO1 7LY, York Minster is magnificent and worth a visit.

Such an interesting and enjoyable city for its size.

Such an interesting and enjoyable city for its size. Two days were adequate to visit, I enjoyed the Jorvik visit and walking by the river . A great variety of restaurants , but count your change ,I was purposely short changed 5 pounds when I paid for a meal at a Turkish restaurant and then didn't check my change at the time, left a bit od a sour taste , although the meal was good.

Michel couldn’t have been friendlier. Very helpful and happy to take the time to chat and suggest places to go. Breakfast was fantastic Very relaxed atmosphere. It’s not the fanciest of hotels but then it doesn’t claim to be a 5 star. Had a great stay and if we go back to York again we’d be highly likely to stay there again.
