The location was perfect, just on the edge of the village and a stone’s throw from walks along the River Wear & the Weardale way.
The Staff & owners could not have given a warmer welcome and been anymore attentive. Full English breakfast was a cracking way to start the day the following morning to. Great value for money.
Around 45 minutes’ drive from Durham and Hexham, Westgate Manor is an elegantly styled Victorian manor house with fine views of the beautiful Weardale countryside.

ideally located on the high street near to a couple of pubs for your evening meal. There is secure parking to the rear of the property, ideal for motorcycles but access would be very tight for a car (unless it was exceptionally small). The rooms were very well decorated, plenty of power sockets for charging phones etc, and well equipped. The beds were super comfy. The full breakfast was very well cooked and nicely presented (having been travelling for a week, this was the best we experienced). The host was welcoming and keen to help when possible.

What a glorious place. It is so peaceful, you can hear the birds sing and just feel so relaxed. Great location in the area to explore. Ate in the pub and had reasonably priced home made pub food which was very good.
St Johns Chapel is a small place but surrounded by hills, meadows and views to enjoy. If I came again would stay for longer to explore.

Its a pleasant place to visit and it feels as if you are stepping back in time as it retains the character of the past but this is balanced against providing modern living facilities. The nature is amazing and for energetic people it provides miles of perfect hiking opportunities. Its worth a visit if you want to spend time in a quiet, calm space

After covid, the village seemed a bit run down, with cafes closed. Busy road running through the centre of the village. Good location for exploring the North Pennines with Teasdale and Weardale within easy reach offering waterfalls, riverside walks and fascination industrial heritage centred around lead mining.
