The Admiral Hornblower, hotel in Oakham

Beautifully situated in the historic market town of Oakham, this 17th-century former farmhouse has been lovingly restored to offer luxurious guest rooms with Freeview TV, whilst still retaining its...

The room was nice, it was across the yard from the pub which was good. It was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The room was great value as breakfast was included and it was gorgeous. Staff were very nice. Parking advice: we were given a postcode to park but couldn't find it. If you follow the postcode then turn right (opposite Tescos) go through what looks like housing parking right down to the end, through a very narrow arch and there's parking there. Tesco car park is free for 2 hours if you want to check for spaces first. We were also previously given a postcode by the hotel for a local car park but it wasn't overnight, it was short stay, so research your car parks beforehand as there are long stay in Oakham too. Apart from the parking issue, we had a lovely stay.

Loved the buffet breakfast, it had something for everyone and there was plenty of space to move around and choose what you wanted. The grounds were nice to take a stroll around after dinner and the outside terrace at the restaurant was a nice place to sit and relax with a drink to enjoy the evening sunshine.

Rutland Water is a fantastic location to visit.

Rutland Water is a fantastic location to visit. The circular walks/cycle riding paths are 1st class with a mixture of wood trail and tarmac. No swimming in the water but the is a very large aqua park for the kids to enjoy. We found a gem restaurant at The Everest Lounge Church St Oakham. Nepalise, Indian, Asian dishes well worth a visit

I’ve never visited Rutland Water before.

I’ve never visited Rutland Water before. It’s a lovely area with lots to do. Walking, cycling and water sports. We did some bird watching at the centre at Egleton (cost £7.50 pp). At every access point to the water there is a pay car park. If you visit several places this can mount up. We had a coffee and a very disappointing bacon roll at the Barnsdale takeaway cafe. I asked if the bacon to be crispy. It was absolutely burnt. We had Sunday lunch at the Finches pub on the peninsula. We ate at 3.30 and although it was pretty good the roasties had probably been kept warm too long and were tough. The smoked salmon starter was delicious and the chocolate brownie was nice and big. Staff were very nice. Large garden. Car park rammed.

Rutland water is an excellent intro to nature walks and waterside activities. Cafés and restaurants abound along with gift and souvenir shops. Oakham town is nice to walk around as is Stamford. Burleigh house and gardens deserve a whole day (at least) to explore.

It is in nice settings. Lots of walking. Restaurant is up a lot of steps from our accommodation. We only found out as we were leaving that there are buggys and a lift in one of the buildings. A bit more communication when you book in would help.

Oakham is such a lovely place to wander around.

Oakham is such a lovely place to wander around. You could start at the Castle Cottage cafe within the castle grounds and see the walls of horseshoes, wander down the high street to the small-but-perfectly-stocked Walkers bookshop and pick up the best pork pie from Leesons butchers or perfect bap from Hoagies next door. Pop into Victoria Hall for art from local artists and watch Oakham's resident potter in action. Lots of independent shops. The museum is free and was surprising excellent (loved the friendliness of the staff and the good selection of gifts for children and arty people). There is a market on Wednesday and Saturday - veg and a baker, with florist, fishmonger, butcher, dairy and picture framing among others. Dog friendly banking hub if you need cash, And so many great pubs! Recommendations: Jamel's cafe, Sarpech (fancy Indian), Hitchins Barn (fancy English), Mill Street for fancy shops then through to the Maltings for Rocka-Buy Records, Finkey and Dean Street are cute to walk along. The Grainstore brewery do tours which come with a ploughmans, and you'll want to stay local or catch the train home afterwards! Ovation for wine and cocktails. For lounging near a fire, try Wisteria Hotel or the George on the market square. There seems to be a lot of concerts in the park in the summer (most Sundays), and lots of beer festivals too (CAMRA in the museum, the grainstore pub). The library and the museum have leaflets for what's on. Wednesday lunch you might be able to catch a free Oakham School concert in All Saints Church. If you are into bird-watching, apparently Rutland Water is one of the best places for it. Trains don't run on Sunday mornings - one to bear in mind if you want to visit Stamford (which is easiest by train). Public toilets: Church Street, in the castle or one in the library.

I love the scenery, the wildlife, I'm a walker, so great walks, the town of oakham has everything u need, but what I like most is it's not commercialised, still a pretty little market town.i also used train & went to peterborough, the parking at the station was only £2.50 for the whole day. I had lunch one day at a lovely little cafe tucked in the corner of the market Square called Hungry Birds.

Our bedroom was large, airy and dog friendly. The gardens are lovely and the field area behind the hotel was great for letting our dog stretch her legs. This was also a great place to relax and watch the highland cows. The bar is dog friendly with a specific dog friendly dining table, which enabled our retriever to join us and sit under the table watching the world go by. Which in turn enabled us to relax and enjoy the excellent food on offer at breakfast and dinner. The staff were all very friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

I had a cosy double room and it was more than adequate. Very nicely furnished and a coffee machine as well as a kettle. Had a party of friends for dinner in the restaurant(Blossoms) the food was very nice but the service was a little underwhelming, although very friendly it was a little slow at times even though it was pretty quiet. The hotel is in an amazing location right by the Rutland water lakes.

The very kind chap from the restaurant next door. He was part of the hotel but it's an "unmanned" hotel, so I think he was covering for a manager (flood conditions in local area making travel difficult- that was my reason for having to book the hotel!)
