Berkshire Arms by Chef & Brewer Collection, hotel in Midgham

Within easy reach of the M4, Berkshire Arms by Chef and Brewer collection is 8 km from Newbury town centre and Newbury Racecourse. Thatcham Train Station is 1 km away.

The meals were quite inexpensive. There was a big sign from Alberto, I think, welcoming us to the hotel which looked like a good start.

Breakfast was excellent. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. From the initial geolocation of the premises, it was necessary to walk in and obtain a map from reception in order to locate the car park 😏 The disability equipped room was reasonable but the bed... Atrocious... A jelly of a mattress on top of a hard wooden box. Only a minimum size double against a king-size headboard as an aged married couple (disabled wife) we spent most of the night trying to get comfortable and avoid falling off that horrid mattress. To give anyone comfort in future it needs to be replaced by a king-size double or twin-single set up..... Please ! The staff on duty both for evening arrival and morning departure were pleasant and helpful, above and beyond......

We should have been asked if either of us would have difficulty in climbing stairs and walking long distances to our room. We should have been told that the fixed radiator did not work and that the second, portable type, was in the room for that reason. The window in the room needed to be draught proofed. We were there on a very cold night.

Well situated for cycling along the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Well situated for cycling along the Kennet and Avon Canal. Good rail links both west and east. Attractive countryside away from the A4, e.g. back roads to Hungerford which we cycled. Newbury Centre very pretty. Best approached by bike rather than taking car into the town.

Overall a likable hotel in a great location.

Overall a likable hotel in a great location. I thought the grounds back of house were a little scruffy and untidy and I banged my car on the crash barriers around a shed when I reversed (Couldn't see them in my mirror). Good friendly staff and manager.
