The Royal Hotel and Bar, hotel in Lancaster

This charming hotel overlooks historic surroundings, The Royal Hotel and Bar provides comfortable, modern en-suite rooms.

The room was very clean, beds were comfortable. It is very thoughtful to give cereals, milk, yogurt and fruits for the guests as there is no breakfast at the hotel. The location is close to the center and train station by 15min walking. The hotel staff was very helpful for late check in (there is no staff at hotel after 9 pm).

Never found breakfast. There was no map in the room, any indication of how we showed we'd paid for it, and it appeared to be in a commercial cafe on campus.

Very comfortable, spacious room with lots of sunlight. I actually fell asleep here and woke up the next day thinking I was at home 😆 Thankfully I wasn't, as Angela provided an amazing breakfast in the gorgeous dining room. My first time at a B&B and I felt very comfortable.

Charming historic city with lots to see and do.

Charming historic city with lots to see and do. The city is home to two universities and has over 20,000 students staying at any time so the city is vibrant diverse and appealing. A stone throw from the Lake District and Morcomb so a really great base for moving about but a wonderful city to move in with an abundance of enjoyable attractions, a central bus station to attractions and a main railway station. Lancaster is a really wonderful city.

Very conveniently located for access to the M6 motorway,...

Very conveniently located for access to the M6 motorway, into Lancaster itself, into Morecambe but also inland into the countryside. Rooms are the usual fare – clean and tidy but long corridors and a bit soulless. Food is good. Remember to register your vehicle registration otherwise you get a parking ticket. We weren't told this and have had to appeal against the ticket. If we lose it's a £100 fine.

    I went to university here.

I went to university here. Lancaster is a handsome Northern city. NOT particularly pretty but with lots of architectural interest. The food at 'The Merchants' and 'The Quarterhouse' is excellent - and contrasting. It needs good restaurants and both of these are, in there own way, remarkable. Jay Rayner did a fantastic review of 'The Merchants' in The Guardian. He was right. Brilliant food in a nice setting right in the middle of town and also amazing value. It is 'pub prices' for really sophisticated, but 'wholesome' food. BOTH MUST survive, please.

I lived in Lancaster for almost 20 years and I love it.

I lived in Lancaster for almost 20 years and I love it. I still live locally and I went to the hotel as a reward/treat to myself after a significant loss in my life. Lancaster is quite a compact city which is crammed with history and culture and independent shops.

Had a guided tour of the castle which was very interesting.

Had a guided tour of the castle which was very interesting. We also visited the Abbey adjacent. We also like the promenade walk along the River Lune which is easily accessible from the hotel. Lancaster is built on hills so for the mobility limited it can be difficult to walk around. We drove directly to the castle car park for blue badge holders. We ate all meals in our hotel.

normal shopping in the city has declined .

normal shopping in the city has declined . It seems to be just coffee shops and Barbers. if you are a tourist there is the castle to look around and the museum only. if you are a student or like a drink, there is lots of student accommodation and lots of bars and a few nightclubs

Having read all the reviews we were expecting a high standard, however it for exceeded that with a fantastic welcome, an amazing room and great atmosphere. The room was aired and clean with a 1st rate welcome package. The Gateway can honestly rival any 1st class hotel in the Lancaster area. The bus stop outside means it’s in a prime location for non drivers and there is ample parking outside though. We traveled with our dog and were served breakfast outside in their fantastic garden.

It is convenient for a driver to use the facility as it has provided parking and makes life easier than trying to find a parking in town... The University is also accessible by bus, so it makes it all fine for people now willing to drive to town. The rooms themselves are convenient, and access very easy. The breakfast area is not in the hotel building, but it's not very far at all. It has a decent choice of food.

I've stayed here a few times over the years and think it's the best hotel in Lancaster. The staff are excellent - Friendly and attentive. The breakfast is great - full range of hotel and cold options prepared to your order. The rooms are clean and comfortable.so if you're looking for somewhere conveniently located that is clean, comfortable and decent value for money, then this is recommended.

Excellent location, near to all amenities, very clean and warm. Plenty of room for the six of us. Everything provided and a nice supply of games to keep us occupied of an evening. Great base for Morecambe Bay, Lancaster, Blackpool and the Lake District. Thoroughly enjoyed our weekend and look forward to returning. I would highly recommend a stay here.

If you are stopping on your way, you may find the location quite convenient, as it's literally just off M6 (not if you have come to explore Lancaster itself though, as it takes almost an hour on foot to get to the centre and the walk is not even through a particularly nice area). The hotel has a gym and a swimming-pool, which could be a bonus for some.

Perfect. My wife and I stayed for one night having delivered our Son to University. The room was stunning, the staff very friendly and helpful. the breakfast was freshly prepared and very filling. We dined in the restaurant in the evening and again we couldn't fault the food, wine or service. This will be our hotel of choice when visiting Lancaster.

Lancaster House Hotel is a very comfortable, unpretentious hotel. It’s a very cosy and feels very relaxed. I had a huge room, with a large bathroom (with bath & shower), exceptionally comfortable bed and lovely views. It was quiet and calm - both appreciated after a very tiring day at work.
