Great location just under Penshaw Monument, in the middle of the countryside. Very good facilities in the property and very well laid out. Owner even set up a Xmas tree and lights for our stay - a lovely touch. We also made use of the cafe next door - they make an excellent cooked breakfast in the morning.
The hotel is just off junction 64 of the A1(M), less than 12 miles from Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham. It has free parking, a restaurant, a lounge bar and air-conditioned rooms.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The location was excellent. The food was good quality pub-grub. We slept well. The beds were clean. There was not a great deal of noise considering we were above a pub and on a main road.

We knew abought Houghton le Spring already. We needed to be in Stanley, Durham, and East & West Rainton so hotel was ideally situated.
We used the in-house Restaurants & Bar on 3 nights and the Italian Restaurant across the road ! night..
There are bus routes outside the Hotel - I believe maximum fare of £2.00.

Very central for Durham City and surrounding areas.
Very central for Durham City and surrounding areas. Large free car park which was easy to manouvere. Hotel was lovely, rooms were large and well stocked with toileteries, hairdryer, iron on request which was brought swiftly to our room. The adjoining bar was well stocked with lots of different beers/lagers, wines etc. Food was available in either the bar or the Thai Resturant. Staff are very friendly very helpful, nothing was any trouble to them. Would not hesitate to return.

Set by the side of a busy country road in beautiful countryside close to the A1(M). Fabulous beer garden, plenty of parking and large restaurant.
We stayed in a beautifully appointed room but unfortunately this was at the front of the hotel and the traffic was busy. To be fair, if we hadn't needed the window open so wide due to the warm evening then this would not have been a problem to us.

Now 53, I lived in Houghton le Spring for the first 22 years of my life, with many family and friends still living there. I can honestly say there is nothing for anyone in Houghton unless you are visiting friends or family. It's difficult to sum up a place in a few words, but with the single ATM in the town centre not working when we were there, most food outlets having a hand-scribbled note on the windows reading "Cash Only", and all closed shops on a night feeling the need to have steel shutters, sums it up for me. There are still lots of lovely people living in the town, but I really couldn't recommend it to anyone that doesn't NEED to visit!

Near to dual carriageway, 10 mins north east of Durham. Spacious dining areas - wide menu choice at very reasonable prices, plentiful and of good quality. Excellent service and many helpful staff. Pleasantry decorated throughout. Warm bedroom with good lighting and decent TV. Complimentary tea, coffee and water. Separate access to bedrooms. Ideal for a couple of nights stay. There is a P&R only 5 mins away from the hotel: to avoid parking in the city.
originally confused this hotel with another of the same name. What a fantastic bonus! The rooms are lovely, facilities fantastic, food is exceptional, nothing is too much trouble for Daryl and his staff and the locals are friendly & welcoming. The only bad thing i can say is that they're obviously too good because they're fully booked up on my next trip. Gutted!
We have stayed at this hotel before due to location. We have always been greeted by pleasant staff. There's a large bar area with an attached Thai restaurant that serves lovely authentic food.
Apart from not having a gym on site, (can't have everything ), this is a great hotel for the price and we will no doubt book again when next in the area.
Really big bed that was comfortable. Pillows that were more solid than the standard hotel pillow!
Powerful shower with lots of hot water.
On-site restaurant has great food, and fairly speedy room service delivery.
I would return, and I would recommend.
This was our first visit to this hotel. The staff were great nothing was too much trouble. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel, which was excellent for taste and quality. Lovely cleaning lady who spoke to us every day and made us feel very welcome.
This is a very good hotel and superb value for money, way, way better than other travel chain type hotels that would be considered as there competitors. Very good Thai restaurant too which was a very pleasant surprise and delicious.
location of the hotel, comfort of the beds and size of the room, staff were fantastic and would highly recommend to others on this alone. Thanks to all at Highfield Hotel for such a nice experience and welcome.
Lovely cosy room, very quiet. Beautiful food in the restaurant very nice staff.
Had the best nights sleep ever in a hotel.
Breakfast was the best we have ever had. The menu was fabulous. We will be back ❤️
Good links to Durham with the bus stop directly out front of the hotel. Lovely views of Penshaw monument in the restaurant downstairs. Room was spacious, with lovely decor.
