Known for its sandy beaches and good nightlife, Bournemouth is a popular seaside resort on the Dorset coast between Poole and Christchurch.
The town is centred on the Bourne River, running downhill towards the sea by Bournemouth Pier. This pier looks back towards a promenade lined with beach huts at the foot of grassy cliffs. The promenade continues west to Poole, while a road goes east to neighbouring Boscombe, where anglers often fish from its pier. Overlooking it is a clifftop road housing some Bournemouth hotels with sea views.
Booking.com also offers hotels near the BIC – Bournemouth International Centre in the West Cliff area. This convention centre and music venue is a short walk from the Art Deco Pavilion Theatre, located next to the Lower Gardens. In this popular city park is the Bournemouth Eye, a tethered hot air balloon that offers far-reaching views.
At the park’s top end the river disappears under a large square, then emerges in the Central Gardens. Overlooking these gardens is the Victorian town hall, which used to be one of several spa hotels in Bournemouth. Opposite is a Grade I-listed church, and St Peter’s Church has the grave of Mary Shelley, author of ‘Frankenstein’.
On the outskirts of town, near 4 golf courses and the Castlepoint Shopping Centre, is Bournemouth Airport.
Review of Our Recent Stay in Bournemouth
We have been visiting Bournemouth for many years, and it has always been one of our favourite holiday destinations. However, on our recent trip, we couldn't help but notice some changes since the pandemic. While Bournemouth remains a good place for a holiday, there have been some noticeable declines.
One of the highlights of Bournemouth has always been its beautiful parks and pristine beaches. We were pleased to see that these are still very well-maintained. The local authorities have done an excellent job keeping these areas clean and welcoming, providing a perfect setting for relaxation and outdoor activities.
Unfortunately, not everything has held up as well. Many of the hotels in Bournemouth seem to have suffered from a lack of care and attention. The economic impact of recent years has forced quite a few to close down, and some of those that remain open could use some refurbishment. It was disappointing to see this decline in the accommodation options, which used to be one of the area's strengths.
Despite these issues, there are still plenty of activities and places to visit in Bournemouth. The town offers a variety of attractions for all ages, from cultural sites and family-friendly activities to vibrant nightlife and excellent dining options. There's never a shortage of things to keep you entertained.
However, we felt that prices are steadily creeping up, and it seems like you're getting less for your money than in previous years. We've noticed this trend not just in Bournemouth but across the UK. While it hasn't deterred us from visiting, it's something to remember when planning your budget.
Overall, while Bournemouth has seen some deterioration since the pandemic, it remains a worthwhile destination for a holiday. The beautiful natural scenery and range of activities still make it a good choice, but be prepared for some changes and higher costs.

We liked the way we could go everywhere we wanted to on the Beach Breezer bus which we could catch at the end of our road or at Boscombe Pier.
There were places to eat within walking distance of the property. We also sampled ice creams available at numerous places along the promenade. Also, important for older holiday makers, lots of toilets available!!

Bournemouth remains a lovely place to visit for the beach,...
Bournemouth remains a lovely place to visit for the beach, attractions, shopping and long walks. Sadly some of the highlight features from previous visits have gone, the funicular, the balloon in the gardens. But, the gardens themselves are great for a walk. The aviary with its colourful birds was nice to see. There are still some lovely shops. But, like many other places there are a few closed down and graffiti marked buildings that affect the look of the place. Such a shame. But, we and the group we booked for all had a great time and would visit again.

A very pleasant British sea side town although not without the usual signs of economic decline in the high street. Lots of restaurants and eateries in the town centre and what appeared to be a very good bus and rail service. Open top buses available at frequent intervals to places like Swanage and around the Isle of Purbeck. Frequent train service to Wool with bus service to Lulworth Cove and the Jurassic Coast from the station. All well worth visiting.

Bournemouth is my favourite place in England to take some...
Bournemouth is my favourite place in England to take some rest from London duties. I love absolutely everything in there; sandy beaches, landscapes, hospitality, people, pines, cliffs... the only one problem is to find a parking place during the weekends and summer holidays, but if you look around a bit, it's doable, not really at the beaches but within a mile. Actually, it's good to have a walk, so for me personally it's not an obstacle to come to Bournemouth at any time. I visit some favourite places in that area also in the winter and I always step into the water, no matter what. I would definitely recommend Bournemouth as a lovely place to relax.
We’ve never felt more welcome with our dog than here! The love and attention was simply amazing. We had a little doggy welcome pack and a customized map with all the dog friendly things to do. Pam was very attentive and gave us advice that had us visit some real Bournemouth gems. The room was extremely spacious and comfortable. Very soft bed and pillows that guaranteed a good night’s sleep after a long day of sightseeing. The location was perfect - quiet but also very close to the beach. A real home away from home!
We had a great stay at The Hedley Townhouse. The hotel is spotless, nicely decorated and the rooms are nice and comfortable. The owners are super friendly and caring for their guests. They put breakfast items in the tea room in the morning, which was very nice before starting the day exploring the area. The location is perfect, just a few steps from the beach in a quiet area with dining options around. It was a great experience all around and we would stay there again if coming back to Bournemouth!
Ged and Jane were very welcoming. They put Easter chocolate eggs on the bed for us, which was a really nice touch.
-The room was exactly like the pictures! It was the cleanest room I've been in a bed& breakfast/hotel in the UK. The room was on the top floor, so it can be quite warm in the from time to time, but there is an air-conditioning unit!
-Breakfast was lovely!
-Locationwise, it's 5min walk from the Bournemouth train station. It takes something like 20-30min to walk to the city centre.
I had a very pleasant stay by the sea. The apartment was spotlessly cleaned and well equipped. My first experience booking a whole apartmnet rather than a hotel. It was compact but absolutly spot on for my needs. Free parking space was an unexpected bonus for the town centre location.
Thank you again for your help and letting me book in the last minute. I will most likely be back with my family in the summer to enjoy Bournemouth Beach.
I have stayed here numerous times and must say I don’t stay anywhere else when I come to Bournemouth!
It’s within walking distance to the beach, the hotel restaurant is amazing! The chefs need a prize, not to mention- the bar tender makes the best mocktails!
The reception staff are so friendly and the gym and spa facilities are great.
A great location to unwind and enjoy, I truly love this hotel and will be sure to be back!
The best & so lovely, professional special shout out for Cathy, Calla, the young barman from North East England and the night time male Santos who couldn't do enough for me to help when I had to be up at 3am , leaving at 4.30 am for my check in at 5 Bournemouth Airport.
Every single member of the single member of the sfaff ( all Staff are the hotel's best asset and a credit to themselves and their employer.
Hotel is very nicely situated across the street from a great beach with much activity, and close to the city and many shops, restaurants and pubs. Just a short taxi from the train station. The full breakfast includes a variety of menu choices that are nicely prepared, and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Our room was very spacious with sitting area, and comfortable.
The room was bright, recently updated and comfortable. The location was very good, easy walking down to the beach and boardwalk in Bournemouth as well as to restaurants and other entertainment. The parking was right behind the hotel. I loved that the hotel was dog friendly even though we didn't have our dog with us. There was live music in the lounge in the evening.
Easily the best hotel that I have stayed in when I visit Bournemouth and I've stayed in quite a few different hotels over the last few months. Great value for money, large rooms, really comfortable beds and facilities. A five minute walk from the town centre and the beach. The staff are all really friendly and helpful. I've stayed here twice and will be booking again.
Hotel reception guy was very welcoming and polite. Room was very spacious and clean. Location is defo the best thing literally a 2 min drive from the beach! I read the reviews for the hotel after I booked and I really was dreading checking in but I wouldn’t trust any of them because the hotel was actually lovely. Yes its dated but it’s nice. You get what you pay for.
I stayed in room 23 which I loved. It was right next to the reception. I didn't mind the noise coming from people that were checking out. I think I had the best sleep in years! The room temperature was ideal for me! Thank you!!!
If I ever go back to Bournemouth definitely I will book again in this hotel and I will definitely ask for the same room.
Had a great stay at urban beach great location the room was outstanding bed was so comfortable I've stayed in Bournemouth lots of times in different hotel and this was the best hotel room for the price and just a 10 minute walk to the beach and a 10 minute walk to the town couldn't ask for know more will definitely be coming back to urban beach.
The position of this hotel is ideal for Bournemouth Town centre and the beaches. The staff are polite and helpful. The food is good. The rooms are very warm but fans are provided. Everywhere was very clean. The toiletries in the bathroom were nice. There were lots of tea and coffee sachets with nice biscuits and bottles of water.
The hotel was well situated very near to Bournemouth beach and pier. There was onsite parking. There was a lovely family sized room with comfortable spacious beds, en-suite. Health and wellness centre with gym, pool and sauna.
Very good location 5 minutes from the beach at Alum Chine - a lovely quiet area of Bournemouth. Comfortable bar area and spacious restaurant with a view of the sea. We were upgraded to a large apartment.
This is our fourth stay. We don't stay anywhere else in Bournemouth. The Indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi are lovely after a day at the beach. Great location. Comfortable clean hotel.
Hotel very clean, staff very friendly and helpful, great bar, excellent breakfast options/choice and location was perfect for our stay. Walking distance to town, beach and gardens!!
The Royal Bath Hotel is in one of the best locations in Bourenmouth, just a short walk to the beach and the town centre, really enjoyed the stay and the staff are great.
