Bishop Auckland is up and coming, very sad to see so many empty shops and building but council encouraging more businesses to open. The Stack being built, more work being done to save old buildings; heart warming. People I met were lovely, interested and helpful. Kynren run by over 1000 volunteers, marvellous. EL Castillo for our anniversary meal-delicious! Spanish Gallery-not enough time to get around, big thanks to helpful and informative staff. The Vines for lunch, enjoyable food, owner running up and down stairs, lovely little shop on the ground floor. The Bishops Palace: beautiful architecture and gardens, staff helpful, knowledgeable and passionate about topics. Thankyou D. The Auckland Project; much praise for a community working together. The staff at the Tower were lovely, Thankyou M! Marvellous Toys, Newgate-definitely worth a visit, Venom gets snapped up straight away! Bought a Stormtrooper helmet! Pools Surplus Stores, Newgate (next door to above) yummy sweet treats (Kendal Mint Cake, Treacle Toffee, Butter Tablet) for your friends (or for you!) Excellent Boyes-check out the habadashery. Stan Laurel lived here with his family, started his profession at the Eden Theatre, lived at Princes Street, his memory celebrated at Stanley Jefferson (his true name), Wetherspoon pub in the Market Place. A big thank you to the hosts of The Nook, without them our enjoyable time would not have happened the way it did. I hope resident teddy enjoyed us taking him out!

We visited the museums and galleries which make up the Auckland Project, they were all excellent. The local people were friendly and made us feel very welcome. We had a delicious lunch in the Fifteas Vintage Tearoom. We'd recommend Bishop Auckland for a different and very interesting day out.

The great thing about Bushop Auckland is the Auckland project, with the Bishop' Palace, the faith museum, the Spanish Gallery and the Miner's gallery. If you are interested in history and art there is so much to see.

“Nr 1 Cockton Hill Rd” It wasn’t.

“Nr 1 Cockton Hill Rd” It wasn’t. It was flat 1, 36 Cockton Hill Rd. It was clean, apparently newly upgraded property, but… No light bulb in entrance hall No cutlery or crockery apart from 2 mugs in the kitchen The kettle was stuffed with kitchen roll The double bed was side to wall –not as per website. No sheets, or pillows. The landlord appeared to not know the difference between pillows and cushions, and did not accept that the bedclothes as seen were not up to standard.

The Bishop Auckland project has resulted in the wonderfull regeneration of significant landmarks and history. Bishop offers wonderful period buildings, gardens, accommodation and restaurants. Nearby towns and landmarks offer a wide range of ‘things to see and do’ to another level. Park Head Hotel Bishop Castle Spanish Museum Kynren Durham Cathedral Raby castle I will be returning to Bishop Auckland on our next Europe holiday.

Market place area is lovely- The Auckland project is doing wonders for the town. Castle and gardens are outstanding - very knowledgeable young people helping out with the archaeological dig and providing information for visitors. The Kynren Festival is amazing - yet so few people have heard of it. It's an outdoor spectacular acting out Britain's history and using 1000 local volunteers as actors ... not to mention the horses, sheep and geese! Fabulous special effects including fireworks and choreographed fountains. An absolute must see in a lifetime! Plaudits to local philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer whois responsible for both this and the Castle!

The cleanliness of this home was the first thing that came to notice, head and shoulders above other dog friendly properties in the local area that we’ve stayed in. The bedrooms and bathroom facilities were bijou hotel quality with what looked like a new kitchen. It’s definitely cosy and well equipped with the advantage of 2 w.c.s There are green spaces for dog walking on the doorstep, together with a short drive to a choice of supermarkets and the many places that Bishop Auckland offers.
