I lived in Sydney for 10 years and never spent time in Newcastle until I was homeless and needing to be near Sydney for car repairs. It was fabulous. The beach access, the availability of anything a big city should have, plus the less snooty people everywhere--really combined to make for an enjoyable several weeks. Google for the best review, and head that way.

Newcastle was and still is a city based on heavy industry.
Newcastle was and still is a city based on heavy industry. Much of that has gone or changed and the city is busy reshaping itself. The city beaches are wonderful to walk on, lots of surfing etc. Their are also the details of the refurbishment of the Newcastle Ocean Baths to admire - amazing. I was there for a week in very cold weather. Still, the city is sunny, the new Light Rail is excellent for CBD transport and there are very good cafes, for example in Darby Street where you can escape the coastal winds.

I live in Sydney, just 160 km / 100 miles to the South, so not exactly a traveller. Newcastle is a nice place, less frantic than Sydney. It has great beaches, lots of places to dine out suiting all budgets, a very pleasant foreshore area.

Newie has come along in leaps and bounds since my childhood in the city. The downtown area has been completely rejuvenated and has a great, hipster vibe to it that was sorely lacking in the past.
The best beaches in Australia, the best rugby league and A-League team, and world-class wineries on your back step.

As we were stuck in Newcastle and in the hospital for the majority of the three weeks we were there, I couldn't get out quick enough....but in the time that I did have spare to look around, if you get away from the industrial areas, there are many areas around the beach in Newcastle that are beautiful. If you get out towards the Hunter Valley, Warner's Bay or Nelson Bay even better.

Newcastle is a busy port on one side and a beach holiday paradise on the other. There are several points of interest, such as the fort and the lighthouse. Good walking for the fit.
From the transport interchange, there is a useful, very regular, tram (bright red) out to points along the way to these sights. Tap on tap off with your credit card, if you don’t have the local Oyster Card. We found Rydges cafe and Queens Wharf good places to take refreshment whilst watching the ships passing to pick up coal. Newcastle is the largest coal exporting port in the world and watching them move with tugs in attendance is quite relaxing while you enjoy a drink.
The museum gives a good overview of Newcastle’s development, without being too exhaustive. Entrance is free. Give it a go, as it’s next to the Information Centre who are very helpful.
From Queens Wharf there is a short ferry across to Stockton, a small town with a good view of the harbour and shipping from its local park. Take your water and sun hat but toilets are a bit thin on the ground.
I would have liked more time to explore and take photographs. Enough said!
As pub hotels go, this I rate very highly. Staff super cool and restaurant had all the right food for me.
Room was big enough and felt quite cozy during my stay. Enjoyed a walk to the beaches and Newcastle lighthouse.
There are restaurants I liked nearby (Darby Street) and a supermarket for fruits etc..
The tram runs right past the hotel giving easy access to other locations and the Newcaste interchange.
Definitely one to remember for my next trip.
Couldn’t fault this hotel, friendly staff that communicate well, clean comfortable rooms, pool and swimming a area were great. Located next door to a 24/7 coles express that was great for morning coffee and snacks. Excellent Mexican restaurant a few blocks up. We walked to the beach and ocean pool was one of the best I have been to.
Excellent location close to everything that Newcastle has to offer.
The rooms, although small, are comfortable with very luxurious beds.
There is a guest laundry on level 2 with large washers and dryers that cost $3 each per load.
There is barista coffee available at reception.
The hotel has a 24 hour reception.
Beautiful hotel within walking distance og shops, cafes and the waterfront. The King size bed was a dream, the breakfast was good and we loved the concept of having a free filtered water tap in the hall to save on plastic. We stayed for 2 nights and are definitely coming back next time we visit Newcastle.
breakfast was nice, good variety of options. Nice size room, comfortable, clean, quiet
I liked the big bottles of shampoo, body wash etc instead of the little bottles hotels usually supply.
car park was easy and convenient.
staff friendly and helpful
good self laundry facilities
good location
Amazing attention to detail. No matter what we needed it was there. Lovely modern unit, spotlessly clean with very comfy beds. Secure undercover parking and access to apartment. Woud love to stay there again on a visit to Newcastle.
Close.to beach and restaurants. Close to main area of Newcastle and to civic centre. Easy to get around by walking and catching tram. Have stayed at Noah's before and will stay at Noah's again because of location and good Hotel.
The Clarendon is right in the heart of Newcastle. Right near the river so you can jump on a pathway and go for a morning jog or walk. The rooms are spacious and it was like a little apartment rather than a hotel room.
The motel is in a good location for visiting Newcastle, it is only about 15 minutes drive. The room was quite small, although it was comfortable, and the breakfast was very good. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
Location is next to Darby Street, which is where its all happening in Newcastle. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The bed was bigger and more comfortable than expected. Great value for money.
i really liked the staff behaviours towards the customers, they were very friendly and helpful.
Very good size 2 bed room unit. The rooms were clean and kitchen was big, though we didn’t use it.
The hotel staff is so nice. The rooms are clean and regularly serviced. The location is perfect with easy access to 7eleven, food outlets and bus stop.
