Darwin displays a cocktail of cultures from ‘Aussie larrikins’ to the local Aboriginals from Larrakia Country. Throw in an influx of international visitors who now call the Top End of Australia home, and this concoction bedazzles with busy outdoor markets and an adequate supply of drinking holes (pubs).
The modern Darwin Wharf precinct, including Stokes Hill Wharf, still gleams on those endless summer days having been rebuilt after the destruction caused both during World War II bombings and Cyclone Tracey. Grab a bar stool with a view of the harbour or a seat on a terrace and sip a cool drink in Australia’s northernmost, tropical capital city.
A popular time for tourists is Darwin’s dry season that starts in May and ends in October. If you prefer it hot and humid, then the end of the wet season can be spectacular when the waterfalls in Kakadu and Litchfield national parks are at their mightiest.
Australia’s wild frontier can be reached all the way from Adelaide and Alice Springs along the picturesque Stuart Highway that ends at Daly Street in the CBD. Outside the centre are the natural surrounds in Palmerston, Humpty Doo and closer by is Mindil Beach with its famous Sunset Market.
Darwin International Airport has international flights from Singapore and Bali. You can choose from a variety of hotels, hostels and apartments on Booking.com.
Darwin is an easy city to get around. The bus service was easy to navigate and free for seniors.
The dining scene was interesting and we had some great meals.
Mindil markets on a Thursday was heaving and the food overrated, however the sunset was lovely.

We loved our trip to Darwin unfortunately we only stayed for four days so were not able to see as much as we wanted to but we still had a good time. We used the free public buses that senior card holders can use and this got us to the Casino, Mindil beach market and Fannie Bay. We went on a sunset cruise on the harbour and took advantage of the free shuttle bus that goes around the waterfront to get us to and from the boat.

Great town with some good bars and restaurants, the waterfront area is an upper class feel as apposed to down town. Heading out to Berry springs and Litchfield national park is a must do if you like swimming in pristine waterholes and of course going to the Mindil Beach night markets and watching the sunset.

Darwin winter we found very humid, the heat was expected.
Darwin winter we found very humid, the heat was expected. City is vibrant with good food outlets, but not a lot catering to Ceoliacs.
Street parking, be aware it is all timed meters.
Mindil sunset markets are a must go to. Lots of street foods at reasonable prices.
Wave pool on waterfront was fun, and reasonably priced.

Darwin has a vibe, full of lovely cafes and nightspots and a very interesting history from World War 2 and Cyclone Tracy. The Waterfront area is beautiful, lovely well maintained parks and fabulous markets. Evenings, everyone comes out to see the spectacular sunsets over the water. Evenings are warm - people go out walking, outdoor exercise classes and pop up eateries galore. Gateway also to Litchfield, Katherine and Kakadu - what's not to love!
Firstly you need to know this is an older motel style of accommodation. If you're looking for the Hilton this is not it, but, its clean, it is well maintained, the managers and cleaners do a cracking job. The towels are changed regularly, as is the bedding. There is a fridge and TV in each room but no cooking facilities. The hotel also has a nice pool and BBQ area. Air-conditioning was A+.
Its in a cracking location on Smith Street so close to everything. Bars, Mindil Beach, Cullen Bay, Darwin Waterfront etc
Modern, spacious and well appointed property with a panoramic view across the harbour. Lounging on the balcony on balmy Darwin evenings, while watching the passing marine traffic, was a highlight. A nice collection of treats in the fridge greeted us. Dual parking spaces. Secure and safe premises and basement carpark. Easy walk to the waterfront precinct (my pick as the best locale in Darwin) and the city cbd is around 15 minutes walk away. The property was accurately advertised.
The hotel and room had all the basic necessities and was nice and clean. Their free 24/7 shuttle to and from the airport is convenient. Most importantly for me, it was a 20-minute walking distance from Marrara. There's also a tavern and a servo next door which came in handy. I didn't use the pool, but I sat poolside and the whole area looked nice and well maintained. It's not a 5-star hotel as Booking.com lists it, but it's a decent 4-star facility.
What a great location. This apartment just felt so comfortable to stay in. The Waterfront precinct in Darwin is not cheap to stay in so we found this apartment to be good value in the context. Lots of extras included for your stay which made it more homely. Thankyou for extra details put into this place. It shows that you actually get what travellers want. We loved it.
Would highly rcommend this apartment to any of our friends or family.
A real pleasant surprise. One of the best hotels we stayed at on our visit to Australia. The staff were fantastic. Very friendly and helpful. The rooms were very clean, beds super comfy and quite big. The breakfast was basic but great and started at 5.30am so you could get food before any early morning coach trips. Fab coffee too. This would be my first choice to stay again if I was back in Darwin.
the memories of what the Hilton Mitchell St, use to be!!!
executive suite 5 Star hotel, is a joke!!!
They should by furniture in FB MARKET AT LEAST THEY WILL LOOK BETTER , bathroom filthy, no bottle water on the rooms, since Sunday 30/01 till now 4/02 nobody change the linen, they never change the used dirty glasses. Absolute disaster!!!!
Very good location at Darwin Waterfront with a range of other places to eat and drink, still reasonably close to the city. Easy access to parking. Room (self contained apartment) was good - washing machine appreciated after over a week travelling! The hotel restaurant, Curve was quite good and well located next to the park.
Why would you stat in a hotel room when you can have a beautiful, self contained, fully serviced apartment for about the same daily rate. A full size fridge, cooking facilities, air conditioning, it's as good, no it was better than living at home. Absolutely magic, will definitely stay here again in the future.
I stayed here for 7 nights while the hotel was undergoing major renovations. My room on the second floor was large, clean, the A/C worked perfectly. It is a few minutes walk from the center of Darwin and the neighborhood can be noisy at times and especially during the nights.
Facilities to this hotel are very good, pool area is spacious and the bar connecting has good vibes throughout the day and night. Location is also very good with being a very short walk to the waterfront district. Our bed room was of good size with a large fridge included
Loved it! Beautifully maintained, the hotel is in the city but in a quiet street opposite a park. I had a bungalow with a little deck, which was very comfy. The staff are so helpful and delightful. If you want a few days to explore Darwin - stay here.
Darwin city hotel was a great place today. The staff were absolutely fabulous, always going above and beyond for any of our requests or questions. Super clean establishment, and rooms were tidied everyday. Thank you for a great stay.
Convenient location as you can walk from the airport to the hotel. Good food in the Chinese restaurant although a little pricey. I loved having access to the larger pool at the Mercure across the road.
Clean, large, comfortable rooms. Central location. Walking distance to shops, restaurants and Darwin Waterfront. Convenient hotel parking. Pleasant staff.
