El Calafate is a small city in Argentinean Patagonia, situated in the foothills of the Andes and on the shores of Argentino Lake. Blending colourful wooden houses and Alpine-influenced architecture, it is the gateway to the Glaciers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in El Calafate and surroundings, from 5-star hotels to cheap hostels.
The area was originally inhabited by the ‘Aonikenk’ people, while the modern settlement grew at the beginning of the 20th century as a refuge along the wool trade route, taking its name from the native blueberry bush known as ‘Calafate’. The town was founded by the Argentinean government in 1927 to promote the colonisation of the area, but its development started only after the creation of the National Park, in 1937.
The famous Perito Moreno Glacier is 80 km from the city. Mount Fitz Roy, the small town of El Chaltén, the romantic Onelli Bay, Lago del Desierto, and Roca Lake are some of the impressive landmarks that make up Argentina‘s 2nd-largest natural reservation. If you want to experience Patagonia’s languid vastness and tranquillity, try some of El Calafate’s rural accommodation or ‘estancias’.

3 nights/2days was just long enough in El Calafate.
3 nights/2days was just long enough in El Calafate. The town really only exists for tours to the glacier, although the local bird sanctuary and walk to Lago Argentina is a diverting enough morning. The town is small, so easily walkable in the centre, and has some good restaurants (Mi Velho was our favorite) . Outside the main shopping street, the town is a little dirty and rubbish strewn.

The personnel at the hotel was tremendously helpful.
The personnel at the hotel was tremendously helpful. They helped me in a difficult situation where I had to buy airline tickets on an emergency basis. They helped organize an excursion, a trip to Perito Moreno and to organize transportation for my group of 13 to and from the airport.
My room was beautiful; in fact, all of our rooms were wonderful.
This is a quiet place.

The only thing to really do is visit the glacier.
The only thing to really do is visit the glacier. I thought we could do more to make an extra day worthwhile but the tours to visit the other parts of the park were super expensive. All tours in the area were way too pricey and you can’t really do anything else without a tour. The restaurants are good, but in general I think Chaltén has a lot more to do and see.

Cute family run apart hotel with individual apartments. It has everything you need for a few days stay in El Calafate, mainly great location: 5-10 min to all the shops/restaurants, 5 mins to the supermarket and there’s a nice bakery just around the corner. The apartment itself was very clean, warm and the shower pressure in the bathroom was great. The owner and her daughter were very friendly and you could tell that a lot of love went into creating a nice ambience.
It´s well located near the city center of El Calafate. On Google Maps this place is categorized as 1-star hotel. And that seems appropriate. The price was however more of a 3-star hotel (and it was categorized as such here on booking.com at the time). I did however sleep well there and all the staff members were doing their job.
This place is absolutely perfect. It is clean, spacious and bright. We loved the little walk to the city centre, and the host was extremely helpful. One of the best stays we had in Argentina!
