I went in the off season when almost everything was closed. So no restaurants, and no food shops in walking distance (come prepared) and very little accommodation open (I recommend Serenity; Iuliana is the perfect host). But if you like an amazing river view coupled with peace and tranquility I definitely recommend a winter visit.

It is one of the best locations to stay if you drive. From Eselnita you can explore Danube from Iron Gates ( Portile de Fier) to Moldova Noua, by car or by boat. Also, you can explore the nearby mountains, with their beautiful sites, too many to count here. Driving up north from Eselnita (Eselnita-Orsova-Baile Herculane) you can choose to explore west side - Bigar Fall, Semenic Mountains) or eastern side - Retezat Mountains, both with plenty of beautiful places, accessible by car or by foot. There are lots of places where you can eat and most of accommodations have their own restaurant and parking lot.

A must to do it's a boat trip, even if it's the short...
A must to do it's a boat trip, even if it's the short version of 2h, also a hike to the Ciucarul mare it's recommended. What I would also have liked to do but haven't got the time would be a 1 day trip with the boat from Eselnita to the entering point of Danube in the country, the Ponicova cave, a visit to the Portile de Fier Museum.
The city of Drobeta Turnu Severin it's also a good destination for 1 day trip.
I would have liked to see some bicycle ways and some sidewalks for tourists.
We have ate at 2 restaurants fish dishes but the food quality was average.

Very nice room with a nice river view. They made us a very tasty dinner with a good wine. They organized a very interesting boat trip with an interpreter. We would like to have more time to sit near the river with a cup of coffe and chat with very friendly hosts.
The setting along the Danube River was lovely. The hotel staff are among the most exceptional in our 60 days of travel, they are good people. We had a very good dinner with a stunning dessert. The pancakes with fig jam take a few extra minutes to prepare but the flavors and preparation are remarkable, we highly recommend! Unfortunately we only spent one night here, had I known better I would have lingered longer.
Good location, next to the Danube, amazing view. The hotel had a nice pool by the river and deck chairs, in case you want to admire the view, have drink and get a tan.
The room looked really good and it was clean. The staff were very friendly.
Good breakfast was included in the mornings. Accessible parking and wifi were available as well.

We can't imagine warmer and more accommodating welcome than what we got when we arrived. Hotel is stylish, very clean, pool area is well equipped, lot of space in the garden and on the terrace just to sit and chill and you can always stroll down to the pier to get even more calm and silence. Owner speaks English better than I do and she is making sure everything is in top quality on daily basis.
Houses are located just near Eselnita, a few hundred meters from the Decebal statue. Our house was very clean and nice, perfect for our needs. The outside kitchen was clean and had all utilities necessary. You could eat breakfast outside next to the river. Owners are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend! They also accept dogs without extra payment.
The friendliness of staff, particularly Mr Radu. The location provided water front with docking capabilities. The hotel (ie House of Sun) is literally scalded by morning sun rays. Each room is provided with large balconies offering million-dollar scenic views while overlooking river traffic.
The hotel, the building, the puscina and the location, everything is very good. Everything is new, chosen with good taste.Modern rooms, the beds have very good mattresses, the bathroom is modern and very elegant. Everything sparkles with cleanliness.
We liked the location of the hotel and the Austrian / Romania owner of the place. The view of the danube are amazing and the local food provided was great.
