Everything went well. We had our own car which made it convenient to get around especially to the university. Otherwise, we thought it was quite a bit of a walk to the main part of town.

Proximity to historic area and Coimbra university was terrific and it was close to the river and restaurants.
I liked the historic nature of the hotel itself. Even though I don’t like elevators it was definitely a treat to ride in such an old fashioned one.

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.
The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.
The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.
The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.
Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.
Coimbra is a charming small town. It has a long promenade along the riverbank and a main high street in the centre with cafés, bars and shops. There are many more hidden away along the side roads so it’s good to explore.
It is however VERY hilly, take comfortable shoes suitable for walking up steep hills and steps!
If, like us, your accommodation is high up there are many Uber rides available - they are quick and cheap.
The locals are very friendly and helpful- some speak a little English but not all so translation apps came in useful.

We were lucky enough to arrive during the last week of term for the university students, which made the town lively and interesting. The tour of the university , particularly the library, was fascinating. It was also lovely to walk through the old town, eat pastries, listen to music and absorb the atmosphere. Sitting in the Botanic gardens with a book in the afternoon sunshine was an opportunity to relax in otherwise busy days.

Coimbra is a delightful town to visit.
Coimbra is a delightful town to visit. The town is architecturally pleasing, with clean, safe, streets, and a refreshing lack of graffiti.
There is a good choice of hotels and restaurants, and those that we patronized were of good quality, with helpful staff, all of whom, in our experience spoke good English. Recommended

Our accommodation had the perfect location; we walked everywhere. The nearby restaurants were serving great food. Our street had 2 nice restaurants that were frequented by locals, and the prices were very reasonable compared to the more touristy places.

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore...
Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers.
Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. We stayed one night, but could have easily stayed another night.
The apartment in Coimbra was spacious and well-equipped, with a great balcony overlooking the city. The cathedral is not to be missed, and the university, which sits atop the city (very high), is the oldest in Portugal, one of the oldest in the world. The university library and the chapel of Sao Miguel are all well worth seeing, advise to purchase tickets (and times) before arriving. The botanical garden is a pleasant place to spend some time relaxing.
Quinta das Lagrimas is a hotel bursting with charm and character. There is much to explore, see and do. The library and church are a "must see", as are the gardens. The location and views from the grounds are very good. The staff were fantastic, helpful and genuinely enthusiastic about the hotel and it's fascinating history. We enjoyed a excellent meal in the lovely and friendly restaurant with many extras and taster dishes added in by the staff.
Moeda 82 was perfectly located in Coimbra on a lane leading straight to the old centre and very close to the train station. We were met at the address on time and escorted up to the apartment. Communication was clear and accurate. There are a couple of restaurants and bakeries a short stroll away. We had one of our best dinners in Portugal at one of these restaurants. The apartment is well insulated, so quiet. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The owners and staff - Joao, Ana, Janet - were so helpful. They booked an amazing boat trip, gave us an orientation to Coimbra, and even gave us a ride when we needed it. The building is gorgeous - if a bit vertically challenging like most places in older parts of the cities of Portugal. They provided an amazing breakfast - try the pumpkin jam with the bread! - and port and drinks at night.
We stayed there for one night during our roadtrip in Portugal. We loved the design and decoration of the house and the rooms. The rooms were very well equipped and clean.
Jonas and Sonia were very helpful and responsive. The breakfast was delicious. The parking on the street in front of the house is free and we found a spot easily.
We would definitely stay at Vila Julieta again!
Everything; especially the location. Situated near the old square, we were serenaded with smooth jazz in the morning. We could reach the market, the university, cathedral, and river bridge in easy walks. The hotel staff were very kind, especially helping us with parking and our bags. The roof top terrace above the Hotel Oslo was special too. We would stay there again.
We were travelling through Spain and Portugal and wanted to stop somewhere that would allow us to chill, re-charge the batteries, enjoy a good meal and not have to pay an extortionate price. This hotel met every expectation for us.
Great facilities, friendly service and a fantastic meal in the restaurant.
Really easy to find just a few kilometres from the motorway.
Our accommodation of our trip to Portugal. Room was massive, clean, and beautifully decorated. We used the kitchen every night because we wanted to enjoy the facilities (picnic table, playground for our toddler, pool). Silvia was so kind and accommodating. Great breakfast. We loved getting to meet the baby goats!
Views were amazing over the city's lovely coloured buildings, Wonderfull kitch room totally bedazzled decor made for a special stay. Wonderful breakfast served in a lovely wicker basket. Hot tub.Thank you for making this one of our favourite stops in Portugal
Great host & hostess. Really helpful and prepared a wonderful breakfast. The best for our entire trip to Portugal. The hostess suggested 2 restaurants and we found them helpful. Very gracious people who tried their best to help.
This property was incredible, the hotel was so beautiful and the staff were all so nice and helpful!
Perfect location to explore Coimbra - if you are debating of where to stay, just choose this property won’t regret it!
Everything was perfect! The house is really peaceful, clean, and welcoming. After several noisy and busy hostels through Portugal I really appreciate the calm of this place.
The staff is extraordinary! The two young men who checked us
In went out of their way to explain what to see in Coimbra. The Oslo is one of our absolute favorites.
