Woodlyn Park Motel, hotel in Waitomo Caves

Situated in Waitomo Caves, 1.9 km from Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, Woodlyn Park Motel features accommodation with a garden and free private parking. Free WiFi is provided.

This is a large accommodation where six people can easily fit. We were a family of four and our kids loved it with the “cozy” feeling, wooden furniture and two bunk beds! It was spacious and clean. Unfortunately, it is a bit dated and we had expected much more from a Hobbit place. Therefore, me and my husband were quite disappointed as we had wished for a true Lord of the Rings feeling inside with e.g. furniture and other stuff related to the movies/books. At least maybe some posters with a map of the Shrine would have been appreciated. I have seen other reviews stating that it smells strange inside the Hobbit place. When we arrived, the receptionist told us that they had left the door opened due to a funny smell that was caused by former guests who had been cooking some smelly food. It surely smelled bad inside, but it was more from an “old” house and mold than from food... We would not have wanted to stay more than one night in that smell, but I can also say that you get used to it after a while. We stayed at the plane as well and that had not at all that bad smell. The surroundings are beautiful though with a lovely landscape and it is just a minute drive from Waitomo Caves. As all the cool accommodations here at Woodlyn Park Motel are outspread, you are not disturbed by one another. We do recommend Woodlyn Park as we love themes and unique accommodations! But I would recommend staying at one of the other rooms and not the Hobbit place due to the smell.

On this trip we went with Spellbound Cave Explorer.

On this trip we went with Spellbound Cave Explorer. Went to two caves the first, after a short walkthrough bush we entered the cave and then got into a rubber raft where we were pulled along the underground stream , looking up at the ceiling it was covered with glow-worms. Very pretty & fascinating. After a coffee break we went into the second cave where we saw lots of stalagmites and stalactites and even the bones of an ancient extinct bird, the Moa. The guide was very knowledgeable and told us how the rock formations were formed. An excellent tour.

Stunning stalactites and stalagmite formations. A huge cave.

Stunning stalactites and stalagmite formations. A huge cave. The tour guide was well spoken and clear and sung beautifully to demonstrate the acoustics. Very clean and spacious walking areas, well supported stairs. Much bigger than imagined. The glow worms were so pretty it was like a stary night sky in the outback. Priceless experience.

    Glowworms good.

Glowworms good. Cave formations underwhelming compared to Tasmania and not value for money, tour guides were excellent though. Village pub and restaurant food was just average but staff were friendly and professional.

We did the Waitomo Cave boat tour in the evening before...

We did the Waitomo Cave boat tour in the evening before dinner and the Ruakuri Cave tour the next morning. They both were stunning. Guides were friendly and informative. We heard from another couple on the second tour that they had done several other caves and an exciting adventure (the Abyss if I remember correctly). I want to do that next time.

The caves are fantastic and well worth seeing.

The caves are fantastic and well worth seeing. Harrison was a great tour guide (and has a good singing voice too) The pathway through is well paved and there are a few sets of steps, but they do have good handrails. People say that once you've seen glow worms you've seen them all, but you can't quite beat the sheer number of them as you go through the caves on the boat. If you can avoid the noisy people who can't be quiet when they've been asked to and then don't know what comes next because they weren't listening, this will enhance your trip.

We just did the one cave.

We just did the one cave. I would recommend doing the main caves and the Ruatara as well. If you are young and up for it, add the black water rafting. Oh and don’t forget the night time walk of Ruatara - see Lonely Planet.

Angus and Rachel deserve their superhost status. Absolutely beautiful location (amazing views!) with its own glow worm grotto nestled in native bush! Gorgeous cottage and very warm and toasty. Great simple breakfast provided - all we needed. Angus full of information and suggestions for local walks and history of the area. Great proximity to Waitomo Caves. Can't recommend enough!

A novelty experience that's quite unique to be in your very own Hobbit house. As per website photos. Love the concept and would recommend others trying the experience. Waitomo Caves are a short drive away.
