The Elopura Hotel located on the East Coast of Sabah which also known as “Land below the Wind”. Elopura name itself was the first name of Sandakan when it was found by William B Pryer back in 1879.

The owner has worked hard to create a gem in this seafront area. The hotel is Hollywood and Star Wars themed, super clean and efficient. Nice terrace bar. Next to market and great seafood restaurant. Perfect in this category.

Would absolutely recommend this hotel. The rooms were spacious, everything was very clean and the beds were very comfy, the showers were very warm and had excellent pressure and they also provided towels. We rented a moped and then a car from the hotel, and they were excellent. Such a reasonable price. The car had some issues the first day that had nothing to do with the hotel, and they could not have been more helpful in fixing the issue. They then replaced the car with a new one immediately. Such a lovely hotel with excellent staff, so friendly and accommodating. Would book again with no hesitation!

First of all, there is no shop to buy the SIM card in Sandakan Airport, the nearest place is 7/11 which is in 5 min by taxi. Next stage of the quest is that you will need to ask someone to share the Wi-Fi with you since you must register your SIM card by yourself online. Perhaps, buying the SIM card in Kota Kinabalu will be the best option.
If you are going to Sukau area, do not consider buying U Mobile SIM card - it will not work there completely.
I would not recommend to have a food at any of restaurants at the seafront: meals will be overpriced and in most of the cases not even edible.
Tours to Bornean bear and orangutan parks will be at least 3x cheaper for you than suggested by TripAdvisor if you will just use Grab taxi to reach it: both parks are located at the same place. Firefly tour is also costly and not really impressive: do not expect to see too much, if you cannot resist to go there.
Pasir Putih Beach could be nice place if the beach was visible under the layers of garbage. Don't recommend to waste your time for it.
There are a lot of beggar kids at the central area. I don't know if they can steal anything, but I guess it makes sense to be careful.

Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm. It is OK and you can find a small number of nice enough places to eat and drink, if you set your mind to it. I would not want to have stayed there more than one day and I won’t be going back anytime soon.

We used Sandakan as the gateway to Turtle Island and the Kinabatangan River. We had lunch in a central hotel which was fine, not a lot for vegetarians but the service was good.
We could have spent a little longer there, it seems easy to get around.

Great little town, wouldn’t spend more than a day or two here unless you were using as a base to go and see the orangutans and rainforest discovery centre or island tours.
Great water front dinners. Shopping mall and grocery store close to water front. Nice vibe.

It’s my home town and I have lots of fond memories. Fresh seafood paradise and amazing mixed cuisine with traditional Chinese, Malaysian food and Indian dishes. Everything in the food market is super cheap and fresh.
The town centre is looking undeveloped and unloved.

Not much to do in the town or much to see and nowhere very nice places to eat/drink. Unfortunately it is quite run down so book a decent hotel to stay in and make the most of the experiences available in the area.
I had an early flight to Sandakan and headed straight to the hotel. I've requested for an early check-in (between 9am-10am). The hotel was very accommodating to allow an early check-in so I can refresh myself before going for my appointment.
I don't usually take breakfast because all I need to start my day is a cup of hot coffee. Glad to see that there's a coffee & tea facility at the lounge so I can have my coffee the way I like it, even if it's instant coffee.
The staff was/is extremely friendly and helpful as someone already mentioned 12 out of 10 in the ranking.
Bobot our guide needs a special mentioning, very knowledgeable about the animals, and a fun person to be with.
The driver to got us to the Lodge SAHA, already explained a lot about Sabah and the Lodge, very helpful.
It should be mentioned, you are in a Lodge in the middle of nowhere, don't expect.a 5star Hotel
My room was what I needed: a place to rest before and after a rainforest adventure. Hot shower, nice bed and a working airconditioner.
Location is perfect. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, a coin laundry right next to hotel's front door (very good after the rainforest!). Hotel is located in the heart of Sandakan.
It was a great location. The facility was very clean. my room had a lot of the original cabinets and they were in very nice condition, very well maintained. The staff was very accommodating. And there was a nice convenience. Store right at the hotel. The ocean was 300 m away. I always felt safe highly recommend.
Great location a few minutes walk from the orangutan rehabilitation center. The rooms are really nice, much nicer than I would expect from a 3 star facility and I'm glad we stayed here rather than at some of the other hotels in the area. The pizzas are good and so are the cocktails.
I like this place very cheap if u book online and the room is big. Nice and clean... how many times already I stay here.. I'm very recommended this place , hotel very near to all restaurant Starbucks, mcd and bataras .. Next time when we go sandakan we actually book this hotel .
-buffet breakfast has so many options- delicious
-room (non-renovated option) was large and clean
-walking distance to Sandakan waterfront (15 min)
-lovely pool area
-on site restaurants
-accommodating staff
-you should stay here!
Hotel was near the airport, we needed to stay in an area near the airport and close to the Sepilok Sanctuary, it was perfect for a night and the restaurant across the street was also very nice and clean.
This place was superb! Great location, can walk to sun bears and Sepilok. Food and drink amazing here. Definitely the best place to eat here in Sabah!
loads of wildlife by your cabin. very clean.
