Just stayed at this ryokan and honestly had the best experience! The ryokan is owned by a hospitable couple that speaks English perfectly, of which one is a former photographer and the other is a former chef. The latter can be enjoyed to the fullest as they offer dinner and breakfast. I enjoyed the food so much, that I dare say it is one of the best meals I’ve had in Japan. They use ingredients from their own field in the backyard, which made them fresh and with a lot of flavor. The countryside is also the view for most of the rooms with big windows to enjoy the morning sun. They were also flexible and made me breakfast even though I had to leave really early. I think it is clear that I recommend this ryokan and would love to come back.

I visited Tomioka during cherry blossom season to see the famous Yonomori Sakura Tunnel. It was truly marvelous, and well worth the drive. Not only were the blossoms lovely both during the day and into the sunset until becoming beautifully illuminated at night - but also, I could see how much this place means for the community and how powerful a symbol it is for hope for Tomioka.
I stayed at Hotel Hojinkan, which is very modern and has wide rooms for accessible prices, and is only a short drive away from Yonomori.
It’s heartbreaking to see the homes that had to be left behind back then, as well as the few difficult to return areas that are left. But it was also very inspiring to see the reconstruction and development that the town has had in the past few years, and the commitment of people in Tomioka to come together and build a brighter future.
