From my perspective, there wasn't much to do within a mile walk of the property.
Only one restaurant off site in that mile two convenience stores and if you walk a bit further a pretty mellow "redlight" district

Otsu Town seems not beautiful at first sigh.
Otsu Town seems not beautiful at first sigh. But go to have a walk behind the hotel. The countryside is like a Miyazaki movie getting real ! You can go near from there : temples, beach, ski station with incredible view… But with the hotel’s shuttle and the station you have Kyoto, very near, Nara, Osaka a little farther. You’ve got all Kansaï by JR… A good tip : when you go to the station to Shirahige shrine, don’t take bus but walk with GPS. The way is just incredible with village, other shrines so quiet and monkey looking at you from the forest behind rice fields…

Otsu, located near Kyoto, is another treasure place in Japan. Faced to Biwa lake it has many historical monument and cultural hotspots. In summer the big firework event is so famous to attract many people. In Biwako Hall many world class concerts and plays are performed. Local fishes and sakes are another charm for visitors. Once you come here you cannot help missing this unforgettable city.

At first I thought I might be bored but there’s so much to do! It’s a little difficult to travel from place to place; lots of walking. But there’s lots of history, friendly people, and beautiful nature.

Otsu is a great location to get away from the city life of Japan. It is quite peaceful here and is located next to a large lake (lake biwa) which is perfect for fishing enthusiasts. Overall, this location is clean and quiet, different from the bustling cities of Japan and i would recommend this place to those who enjoy a scenic walk and a calm environment.

Beautiful spot near the lake.
Beautiful spot near the lake. Perfect for those that want to stay a little out of the hustle and bussle, in perhaps a bigger / better value for money hotel, but still within close proximity to Kyoto.
Everything. The service provided is top notch even though we are using English as a medium of speak. The room is spacious and the bath provided is just so good. Since we're ordering Halal menu set, I would say the menu is fantastic as it includes seafood, beef and chicken which is hard to find for halal option here. The shuttle service also is quite helpful as there is no medium of transportation to the Ryoukan from the station and a mobile phone is provided to contact them at the station.
I was really impressed with the facilities - the bathroom and showers were very modern and clean, good lockers to store your valuables, free towels and slippers (in some places you have to rent them) staff were friendly and there was a nice restaurant next to the hostel. I had nice pizza and beer! I was cycling the Biwaichi and there was a cheap cycle storage place just across the road from the hotel. It's also in a good location for the cycle route.
The included breakfast and dinner was a delicious, visually amazing traditional Japanese spread. This place is a must for anyone wishing to get the authentic ryokan experience, though you have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone a bit to wear the provided yukata and go to the public bath. Easy transit to Kyoto means you can stay outside the city on your visit.
Huge room size and the bed is just facing towards the lake. The view is magnificent. Breakfast is great with lots of food option. Bike rental available (normal bike & electric bike). The hotel also provide shuttle bus service to Otsu Station (3 bus every hour). The Pier is just few steps from hotel and they offer 20% off for cruise ticket.
The Lake Biwa Otsū Prince Hotel is the kind of hotel where many Japanese come for their weddings, it hence has an impressive reception, views over Lake Biwa and high end restaurants.
Rooms are very large, with great views of the lake (our room was on the 32nd floor) and comfortable beds.
The area is extremely romantic.
The innkeeper is an artist and she acts as your surrogate mother while you are here. Be sure to ask for room 203 which is set up as a traditional Japanese living room. She and her husband got up in the middle of the night to see me off. I couldn't recommend more highly.
Hotel has shuttle to pick me up when I arrive at the onsen station. The receptionists are very nice. Quick check in, and arrange for our dinner time. There couple onsen locate in different floors. And also has private room for couples. The food is delicious.
The place was incredibly peaceful. It's situated near Bodai Temple, and in the morning, I accompanied some people in their worship rituals at the temple. Experiencing this Japanese-style garden worship was truly a new and enriching experience for me.
Pretty meh kinda place, so, didn't like anything in particular. That being said, it's not that the place is bad, there's just nothing decent/notable about this accommodation compared to the many other places I've stayed at in Japan.
The location is excellent: right outside of Seta station. There's are convenience stores and an excellent restaurant nearby. Room size is small just like all other business hotels in Japan, and the entire hotel is very clean.
It has a very retro feels of the late 80 and early 90 infrastructure. The room was a fusion of old and new and it really shows. Very authentic Japanese experience in a field of other competitive hotels around Lake Biwa area
The hotel itself is very pleasant. The accommodation was great. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, even delivered my forgotten item to the station. I was able to rewind and relax throughout the stay.
We loved the bath on our balcony and the traditional Japanese style room. There was a lovely garden and terrace and the staff were very welcoming. The buffet breakfast was a wonderful way to finish our stay.
The room is spacious and clean. The mattress is good, feel comfortable. Bathroom is big too. Hotel staffs are friendly and helpful, they do their best to serve us. Really like it.
The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The tour of the local area was engaging and informative. It really made me appreciate the city of Otsu. I would love to come back.
