Third visit for new year. Can highly recommend for it's amazing staff, lovely, clean comfortable surroundings, gorgeous en-suite rooms for our daughter and us. Food and service improved massively from the first time we stayed. Didn't have breakfast, but did go for a meal which was really nice. I also had room service one night, my order took less than half an hour and was delivered by a very pleasant member of staff. My husband and I forgot to pack some swimwear, so we asked the hotel if they could arrange massages instead as a treat to ourselves, and they did, on new years day too! Lovely lady looked after us in the spa, really enjoyed it. The hotel is in a great position, just a 10 minute walk over the river to all the gorgeous shops and eateries.

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Lots of cafes and restaurants to choose from and if you see one you’d like to try in the evening, reserve asap. York is always busy so be prepared for crowds,
especially when the St Nicholas Fayre is on in December.

I've been to York many times over the past 40 years or so.
I've been to York many times over the past 40 years or so. It's still a great City with plenty of history (York Minster, The Shambles) and places to eat. It's also surrounded by beautiful countryside. But like many places now there's too many tourists, too many souvenir shops so best visited off season and in the early morning.

Historic city with a wonderful wall, cobbled laneways, shops, grand cathedrals, and many pubs. Traffic is not allowed in the city centre so a stunning town to walk through. There is very little not to love about York.

Loved it all, the architecture, the people, the food, the history and the ghosts! The York Ghost Merchants has to be my favourite shop. Bettys Tearooms was lovely too. Everything was walkable which was great. Lots of places to shop for a rest and a drink.

York is a great place to visit and not too crowded in winter. We know the city well but always enjoy return visits. It's an ideal place to take visitors from overseas for a very 'British' experience, from historic buildings to good cafes and restaurants and independent shopping. It's easy to get around on foot and there are specialist museums, like the railway museum and the Yorvik Centre as well as the Minster.
