Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

It was ok for me but not sure if others would agree, got a few strange stares from locales. like what are you doing here. Had to walk thru tunnels and along just ok areas to get to the city. Probably would try to find something else if I returned.

I am biased because it is my home town, but:
1] It has the Saints
2] It has Mayflower Park where you can watch the cruise ships depart as well as massive container ships passing by.
3] It has several parks in the city centre and the Common
4] Good shopping in the centre of the city
5] Close to the New Forest and the Isle of Wight
6] Titanic museum
7] The City Walls and the Bargate
But:
8] There is a lot of traffic about, particularly when the cruise ships are in, so take this into account when driving into the city. If you have booked your car on Red Funnel make sure to factor in the traffic delays to avoid missing your ferry!

We love Southampton and come down often always for the boat show and trips over to the Isle of White. There are some great restraints and we are great fans of a little bar called The Butchers Hook.
We have a boat at Saxon Wharf and just around the corner is a lovey café called The Yellow Wellie great for your full English breakfast, also The Bistro at Shamrock is worth a visit for a glass of wine and evening meal. Our latest discovery is called Na's bar its a bit quirky but great if you like hot spicy tie food .

We arrived a little before the 3pm check-in time but our room was available straight away. I had requested a quiet room if possible because my child is on the autistic spectrum and we were given a room in a very quiet part of the hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was exceptionally clean and comfortable. The hotel is in a convenient location for the city centre on the edge of the old town. I would definitely recommend this hotel to other travellers and would stay there if I was visiting Southampton again.
My wife and I booked this hotel as a stopover to Southampton to start our cruise. It’s an ideal location. For travellers to cruise terminals. The hotel itself is stunning, it has obviously undergone a lot of renovation and the decor is stunning whilst in keeping its original features. The staff were fantastic , especially Nick . The breakfast ( not kidding) was perfect , Bacon was cooked to perfection
Return visit to this lovely hotel perfectly located in Southampton. As with other PIG properties, high-end decor and facilities managed by professional staff.
