Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

Southampton was just a day for us, but we did walk around nearby our hotel and found it to be similar to neighborhoods in our home area. We did find it odd that so many shops were closed on a Saturday afternoon including phamacies! Strange.

The old center, within the Walls, as well as the Maritime Quarter and the docks, we have been able to see during our 2 night stay, has quite some remarkable sites with an interesting, historical background.
We stayed in The White Star hotel which is ideally located in Oxford Street in the Maritime Quarter. Most of the town, the Old Center, the Cultural Quarter, the Center, as well as the Maritime Quarter can be explored by foot.

We were quite impressed with the offerings of Southampton.
We were quite impressed with the offerings of Southampton. We only had a greater portion of a day, but we would have liked to spend another day there. We took the National Express shuttle from Heathrow and the Southampton central bus station was ideal for our trip. Did a few things around town but enjoyed the maritime museum - a nice Titanic exhibit. Nice parks around the area where we stayed. Interesting historical sites in the area as well dating to Medieval times. Found a nice beer pub (brewery site) close to the waterfront which was well attended on the nice afternoon of our arrival. And yes, of course, fish and chips.

Southampton seems a nice place but didn’t really have long enough to explore as we only stayed for an event : but I think it’s worth a visit to explore a bit and easy ferry ride to Isle of Wight if you have enough time

For us we needed a hotel close to the port and whilst the hotel is a few miles away, the price, location and ease to to get to the port makes this a good hotel to consider if you are gong on a cruise.
Was a lovely hotel. Lots of parking. Didn't use the leisure facilities as only stayed Saturday night after going to the theatre in Southampton. We arrived early and they let us leave our car and called a taxi for us to go into town. The staff are lovely. Had a lovely comfy king size bed. We chose this hotel because it has a restaurant. We had a lovely meal but is a bit expensive
