Sea front is well designed and maintained.

Sea front is well designed and maintained. Town centre, as with many places, has seen better days and needs modernisation - except The Word which is a great facility. The Marine is a friendly pub to visit for a very good value drink and/or meal. The Metro provides adequate transport locally and the ferry to North Shields is useful.

We were there for 3 nights in The Sea Hotel, but do not recommend staying there as they have some issues regarding being in Administration, they are now owned by Adhams and NOT BEST WESTERN, none of the photos shown relate to what there is in the hotel or the rooms. However South Shields in general is very clean and friendly. Our final night we went to Colman's Fish Restaurant about 10 mins walk from the hotel towards the town and this was exceptional, the food, the staff and the cleanliness of the restaurant was outstanding.

We was able to travel around easily and see many things, we wish we had longer time there to enjoy all the different things we could do there, really enjoyed the national trust light house very educational, and we lived the pleasure beach rides, we also went upto norths shields beach and to the collingwood monument and tynemouth castle and the king edwards beach what with the waves coming in was great fun just keep away from the rocks when the big waves come in because it can cause accidents, we loved it there and wish we stayed longer because so much more we could have done like the aquarium, long sand beach, crabbing, swan boards on pond and mini train around the park in South Shields, Roman fort so on

Unfortunately the streets were very dirty, a great deal of rubbish, dog poo ( in & out of poo bags) lying around, overflowing Wheely bins, back alleys littered with rubbish from overflowing bins, the birds had been pecking at the full bins scattering the rubbish. I am aware there are problems with bin men/women being on strike at the min. Thought the whole area was dirty and unkempt with weeds & rubbish lying around especially disappointing was the area next to Customs House ie the walkway along the river Tyne next to all the luxury apartments, it all looked very scruffy and sad! A bit of TLC , maintenance and weedkiller wouldn't go amiss

Arbeia is a fantastic free and very interesting partly reconstructed Roman fort. There are still ruins to see the excavation but some of the accommodation and the gatehouse have been reconstructed to get a feel of real life. At Sandhaven there is a lovely park with boating lake and mini train rides. There is a lovely child friendly funfair next to the beach and ample free public toilets. When staying in South Shields it is also a pleasure to take a ferry ride across the Tyne . An all day ticket on the metro gets you free travel on the ferry . Both the metro and Ferry are good for getting to other interesting places such as the Aquarium at Tynemouth and Tynemouth Priory. We also visited The Word as they had children's activities for half term .

Ιt was a great pleasure staying at Beechwood guest house. Rez was an amazing host, I had everything I needed in my room, so much coziness and warmth to fight the cold outside. Unfortunately, I was n't able to enjoy the famous breakfast of Rez but...well, next time! The location is also excellent, one breath away from the sea, restaurants, coffee shops and metro station. I was waking up every morning with the sound of the seagulls flying. Highly reccomend it and would definitely like to stay there again. Thank you for having me.

breakfast was great, and overall the staff were helpful. the rooms were clean and big enough, with the prices at a managable level with easy parking. we walked to ocean road where all the restaurants were (about 20 mins each way) and found a good pub as well. we got a bus to seaburn and walked the coastal path back, stopping at marsden grotto for a coffee, and although not the best walk i've ever done (due to the proximity to the road in places) was good enough to give us about 6 miles to stretch our legs.
