The Crown Hotel sits on the edge of Blandford, with views of the Stour River's water meadows and the town. It has a gastro-style restaurant and a stylish, upmarket bar.

The historic building and decor (pictures/books), wide corridors, spacious bedroom, modern en-suite with walk-in shower though would have liked a shelf to put toilet bags on, big/strong hairdryer. Dinner steak perfectly cooked and very tasty and kitchen kindly gave me a mixed salad to replace the watercress one on the menu! Cinnamon cheese cake innovative. Complimentary bar drink appreciated. Continental breakfast excellent value for money - perhaps bag of museli alongside cereal packs would be welcome. Bar/coffee area in the morning warm/cosy and super comfy leather seats. Sunny day so enjoyed the outside terrace/garden and closeness to shops to browse and enjoy Georgian architecture. Very good value for money and staff warm and friendly from beginning to end.

Around 15 minutes’ drive from Shaftesbury, Yew Tree View provides studio accommodation in the Dorset village of Marnhull, the inspiration for Marlott in Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

It was self-contained, with everything we needed. We cooked a meal and then walked to the pub in Marnhull for a drink, and back in the dark with head torches. It's a lovely old pub and complemented our stay at Yew Tree View.

Lovely little hut in a peaceful location overlooking fields but a short work along a footpath to the village with shop and excellent pub. Very cosy to stay in with everything you would need somehow squeezed in.
