    Sanday is a hidden gem.

Sanday is a hidden gem. It has the beauty of long white beaches with gentle waves and a warmth of light that on its own is worth the long long journey: but add in the fact that in our month long travel around Scotland via West coast islands and mainland (including Skye) this was the only place with cafes and restaurants open and varied in August plus the variety and offer in the two island shops, it was the most welcoming and comfortable place we stayed.

I loved the beaches, they were absolutely stunning. Most are not easily accessible due to the large flat stones that lead down onto the sand so good footwear is useful for those. I cooked for myself at the cottage as I had my dog with me so I didn't explore what was available although there is a very good general store that has just about everything you need if self-catering. We travelled around Sanday by car, I did see some visitors on bicycles but that wasn't an option for me although I could have rented a bicycle if I wanted to. Sanday is a friendly place, nothing is too much trouble, I'd go back again.
