To be welcomed by a log fire , and to be able to sit by it was terrific, the bathroom spotless. The view of The Downs across misty levels was wonderful. All good.

The Hotel gives off a relaxed atmosphere and is exceptionally dog friendly, without losing the feeling of being somewhere special. The public rooms are welcoming and comfortable, the bedroom and bathroom perfect. We particularly appreciated being able to wander in extensive grounds, and found all the buildings beautifully kept inside and out. We enjoyed a walk to the sea and swimming in the beautiful spa pool.

We had dinner the first night at the local pub, The George and Dragon, which is 10 min's walk from the property. The meals were fairly priced and quality good. The pub is popular during the day with walkers and the menu is very traditional, with a nod to the 70's and 80's. Both host and staff are very welcoming.
Saturday we went walking, which was a little waterlogged around the river following a few days of heavy rain. But the South Downs Way is very close which was much drier with well maintain paths and views across the Arun valley that are not to be missed.
Saturday evening we ate at the Boathouse. A small family restaurant on the river in Houghton adjacent to the Bridge Pub. The service and quality of both the food and wines were exceptional, within a limited menu. Thoroughly recommended, although we were told the Bridge was very popular by the owner. However, unless you're visiting in the summer on a dry evening when you can walk along the river bank into the village, a car is required for the short journey down the hill due to there being no pedestrian walk way along the roadside.
