The location was incredible, the rooms are better than photos could ever do justice, and the food is out of this world - definitely book for dinner (and enjoy the drawing room beforehand).
We would love to come back, very special stay!

Haydon Bridge is about 15 minutes drive to Housesteads Fort, one of the best preserved forts on Hadrian’s Wall. The town has a good feel to it. The Fish and Chip shop opposite the Anchor Hotel makes great pizzas.

Very good base to stay for visiting Hadrian's wall but the village is quite small with not much there. However it has a pretty old bridge over the river. If you come in the evening don't expect to get a meal at any of the 3 pubs in the village as only one of them serves food and was fully booked when we tried to get in on a Thursday evening. We stayed here and had to eat fish and chips in our room from the fish and chip shop.

I particularly liked the fact that the town is located quite close to Housestead Roman fort and Hadrian's Wall. These are located less than 10 minutes away by car and about a 1-1 1/2 hours walking through quite delightful country side. There are a other bars in the town but we only stayed one night at the hotel and we found that more than satsisfactory as it had served super meals and excellent local beer. The ladies at the Tourist Information Centre near the train station were very friendly and helpful. I'd recommend visiting there for great local knowledge about places to go.

Good base for seeing the sites of Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum, together with impressive sections of Hadrian's Wall. We headed off to the Northumbrian Coast via Kielder Forest, also well worth a visit.

Haydon Bridge township is a pretty place on the river with a historic bridge and buildings, good for a short walk around. We found a lot of very friendly and helpful locals with whom we shared and compared Haydon Bridge with Australia. The High School was surprising, but driving up the hill and out of town revealed a lot more of the town than first meets the eye.
