Waterfront House, hotel in Finstown

Boasting a private beach area and views of sea, Waterfront House is a guest house set in a historic building in Finstown, 5.7 km from Maeshowe.

While not being a traditional BnB, the breakfast options were ample. We were on the move early both days so we wanted to grab and go anyway. We were also late getting into Orkney that evening on the late ferry from Shetland, We didn't arrive at Waterfront House until after 11pm but the owners met us anyway and they were very pleasant and hospitable, despite the late hour. Good communications with them too.

Very nice welcome from a cheery lady and my room was upgraded. It was all very comfortable indeed. There is plenty of parking behind and in front of the hotel. Breakfast was great and had to be ordered the night before. But great options.

The Royal Hotel, hotel in Finstown

Located in Stromness and with Standing Stones of Stenness reachable within 8.5 km, The Royal Hotel provides a restaurant, non-smoking rooms, free WiFi throughout the property and a bar.

The Ryal Hotel is in a good location, not very far from the ferry terminal and an easy walk from the long term parking. The staff are quite friendly. The breakfast chef is good for a chat with some very interesting stories about Stromness and the islands themselves. The wait and bar staff are also good value. One evening with only the Chinese take out available we were allowed to eat in the restaurant and were provided with plates and cutlery. When we had finished, our table was cleared. The implements and containers were removed without any fuss or trouble.

Great for accessing all the A, B and C roads, but visitors should be aware that many of the B roads have passing places. In my opinion this adds to Orkneys charm. Bus stops near the property for travel to Kirkwall, Stromness, and other locations. While the property is near the main road, there really is no such thing as "rush Hour" on Orkney. the road is only mederately busy when people have a ferry to catch. Post office and excellent local store are nearby. With Kirkwall having both a Lidl and Tesco for larger shopping. The people of Orkney have a beautiful scots accent, even when using the local dialect.

Nice village beside the sea at a crossroads with an efficient post office, shop and garage. Ideal base for touring East, West or North and South. It is 10 minutes from Tingwall for ferries to Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre. It is 10 minutes from the Standing Stones at Stenness and 15 minutes from Ring of Brodgar. It is 15 minutes from Kirkwall and not much longer to Stromness. It has an excellent bus service, if you want to leave the car behind for a day or 2.

A village halfway to Stromness handy for the ferry terminal at Halton. Be sure to book a taxi or catch the service bus - its a bit far to walk! There is little to do here and the best places to eat are in Kirkwall (6 miles) A chip van and mobile sandwich/coffee van are to be found in the lay-by on the edge of town. Regular bus services will take you towards Stromness and the main Neolithic monumnents but don't ignore Cuween Hill Cairn which is on the hill behind Waterfront House

Finstown is a lovely little town with great views of the sea. There is an amazing burger van (Leigh's) every day in the car park till 2pm and I can thoroughly recommend it. It is only 15mins from Stromness, so an easy drive from the ferry,

Finstown is an attractive seafronted village. Sadly no pub! Some beautiful gardens in the houses up Heddle Hill. Midway between Stromness and Kirkwall, it is easily reached. Roads in Orkney are the best I have come across in the UK and the standard of driving is excellent, Orcadians are very friendly people

It's a quiet little place but very peaceful with stunning surrounding views, There is a small shop for essentials and a well regarded, visiting fish and chip van every Friday evening. Kirkwall and Stromness are about equi-distant and maybe 10 mins drive each way. My wife and I had a particular interest in the neolithic Orkney remains, Ring of Brodgar etc, and Finstown is ideally situated to visit all.
