We stayed in the suite which was a great size but the bathroom needed some TLC. The staff were very friendly.

Returning stay having loved last year's break, in spite of the poor weather last visit. This time the weather was great and showed the hotel at its best. Lovely surroundings, exceptionally friendly staff, fascinating characterful building with history and current charm, very clean, nice food, very cosy public areas, big room, accessible options, nice bathroom, plenty of towels and large free car park. Very handy for South and Western Lakes and a pleasant back route to Bowness.

Great value for money for a one night stay. Convenient location for walking into Kendal town centre. Staff were helpful and friendly. Wonderful vegetarian breakfast. Nice to have a small bottle of water in room too. Also not very often you actually have conditioner in the bathroom so that was nice

Originally we stayed at the hotel which was lovely but then we moved to the Lake House which was absolutely wonderful - we tried both restaurants - both amazing - as were the staff - to name a couple Dave who drove us to the restaurant from the Lake House and back again - nothing was too much trouble - Emma the lovely receptionist who is an absolute credit to the Gilpin and the barman at the Lake House - in fact, all staff were amazing and a complete credit to this wonderful family run hotel. We’ll definitely return

Burneside is really just a part of Kendal which isn’t a big town. It overlooks the central town area and has easy access to shops and restaurants, it’s very handy for the M&S and Booths foodhalls if you want to eat at home. There are a couple of nice parks, attractive little streets of quaint old buildings and it’s close to the 555 bus route which travels through a large area of the Lakes. It’s a short car journey or bus ride south to the stunning topiary gardens at Levens Hall, and heading north will take you to Windermere and Ambleside within half an hour.
The views across the town to the distant fells are fantastic. The only potential downside for some could be that some of the roads and pathways are a little steep as you are basically on a hillside, so it could be challenging for those with mobility issues.
We had a nice lunch in town at the Bristly Hog, where the staff are really friendly.
