Centre Of Britain Hotel, hotel in Bewcastle

Set in Haltwhistle, 7.5 km from Thirlwall Castle, Centre Of Britain Hotel offers accommodation with a shared lounge, free private parking, a restaurant and a bar.

We are bikers and off street parking is always something we look for when choosing places to stay. The hotel had an excellent courtyard at the rear. As a bonus our rooms were actually little chalets which were also in the courtyard, so our bikes were practically right outside our door. The chalets have the bedrooms on a mezzanine floor, meaning the bathroom and separate sitting area are on the ground floor. Chalet 9 has a sauna too. A little dated but works perfectly well. Breakfast is excellent. A good choice of cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, full English, smoked salmon, avocado on toast, basically something for everyone. The evening meals looked good too, but we didn't eat at the hotel in the evenings, we were out and about. Our hosts and staff were more than welcoming.

The Pheasant Inn, hotel in Bewcastle

The award-winning, 4-star Pheasant Inn is nestled in the heart of the Northumberland National Park, 1 mile from Kielder Water.

Room okay, cold on arrival. Beds comfortable, we were an unusual trio I’d imagine, three adults and the bunk bed was too short for my son(6’7”) so I had a bunk and my son and husband used the two twin beds which were very close together. Bathroom gleaming but shower difficult to operate and water cool. Plenty of towels and lovely toiletries. Very limited tea/tisane options . We attended a dark skies event at Kielder Observatory between 11.30pm and 02.30 on a literally freezing cold night and the room was still warm to come back to.
