Sandra and Frank were exceptional hosts, realising there nowhere for us to have an evening meal, Sandra prepared us a platter of meats and cheeses with bread. We given a welcoming drink in Frank's bar. Indeed, by the end of the evening we had becomes friends with not only our hosts but with others in the bar.

Hotel du Grand Monarque, hotel in Chaudefontaine

Featuring a restaurant and views of city, Hotel du Grand Monarque is located in Varennes-en-Argonne, 36 km from Fort Douaumont.

Varennes-en-A is, today, a sleepy rural town largely forgotten by the wider world. Gone is it's importance as a farmers market, gone are most of the agricultural workers; it's by-passed by bigger and faster roads and no longer enjoys a prime crossing of the Aire. And so it is, sadly, for Hotel du Grand Monarque. Gone are its days of bustle and traffic, gone is the money to refubish and bring into the modern world. It is run with slightly fraught enthusiasm by a young couple who are aware of the huge problem they face in attracting enough trade to produce the revenue to allow modernisation of this grand old building. I had to wait in the bar opposite until the doors finally creaked open and I was allowed access to my room as rececption is very much not 24hrs. As is usual in France, my room was on the third floor, with no lift, which for a 70 year-old is quite a way up. It would be unkind to list the oddities about the room, but there was good hot water for the walk-in shower. Overnight, huge agricultural lorries and tractors would occasionally crash and rattle through the village which was something of a disturbance. The restaurant was a different matter, the evening meal I had was from a limited menu but it was truly excellent using local ingredients very well handled. Breakfast simple but adequate.
