The place may look like a slum city but worth the stay & exploration! The place is very interesting & never judge a book by its cover! Lots to see & do - you just need to take off your rose colour glasses. The Serbian Orthodox Church is a must see even if you aren’t religious!! The opal museum is worth a look & take the short tour - the young man is full of knowledge!! The RSL is a great place on a Sunday afternoon & there is so much more to see & take time to speak with the locals.

    Very unique town.

Very unique town. What you see on the surface is not necessarily what you experience. Took a tour on our first day which we recommend as this gave us a great insight into the history and people of the area, the Breakaways, which were stunning, Dog Fence, Moon Plain, and a working mine - with a glass of bubbles and a very informative and engaging Tour guide, (Noble Tours). The Big Winch 360 Cinema also had lots of historic information about Coober Pedy and the surrounding Outback Towns. We had a meal there - worth recommending - especially on sunset. Faye's Historic Underground Home and Mine also to put on the list. And don't forget the Old Timers Mine & Museum. Plenty more than this but you can do your own 'digging' for more.

Coober Pedy is a small town (approx 1500 people who have come from a wide variety of places) that may have almost as many tourists as locals most nights in winter, as it is the most obvious town to stay in when travelling north/south in remote South Australia - book ahead. Shops and services are few (eg: no vet) however the supermarket stocks a surprisingly wide range of things. Quite a few underground churches which are worth visiting and a few places to investigate what gold mining and living under Is all about - Old Timers gets our vote. Eat at John’s - great pizza, or at The Big Winch which has great sunset views.

Much of the town being underground is something worth experiencing, the people were friendly and helpful, and we visited in April during cooler weather and it was pleasant. We have previously been there in the heat of summer and it's NOT so nice, dusty and hot, which is obviously why most of the town live underground. The nearby Breakaways Conservation Park is definitely worth visiting; you can do a round trip through the Breakaways from Coober Pedy in around 90 mins including at least 30m at the various lookouts and photo vantage points. The colours from brilliant white to deep reds is amazing and the area is so different to the surrounding arid land. The food and service at the Big Winch is superb and it's also a great vantage point to see the town and surrounding area from. I would also recommend John's Pizza Bar in the main street and the Outback Bar and Grill attached to one of the servos serves decent grub too, as well as signature Outback Shiraz (from the Barossa Valley) for about $25/bottle that went down well. Definitely a better town in the cooler months if you dislike the heat.

We stayed two nights, which meant one full day.

We stayed two nights, which meant one full day. Next time I would put in either 3 or 4 nights, giving 2 or 3 full days. In our one day we saw one mine, drove out to the Salt & Pepper rock formation, then had time for some drone shots above some of the mine hills out on the highway. The evening before that, we at least saw sunset from the Big Winch, which was a great introduction to the town. Another day would enable another mine visit at the very least ... since the mines are the most interesting thing about Coober Pedy.

Coober Pedy is a opal mining capital of the world.

Coober Pedy is a opal mining capital of the world. It is an interesting place to visit for a day or two to learn about its mining history, specific life in the Australian desert and to experience a true outback.

Really great find. A lovely, fully self contained, underground studio. Private and quiet while being close to everything in Coober Pedy. Ali's communication was excellent and she provided a detailed list of 'to do' suggestions for the area, making planning very easy. Highly recommend if you want an authentic underground experience.
