Bad Ischl is a nice place with enough activities for a sunny...
Bad Ischl is a nice place with enough activities for a sunny or rainy day. Apart from the local historical places (e.g. Kaiservilla, City Museum), it's an optimal central place for roaming around Salzkammergut - Ebensee, Attersee, Halstadt and Haltstadter See, Wolfgangsee, Dachstein, and anything else you might wish. If you'd like to make a short visit to Salzburg, there's a direct bus about every half an hour.
Bad Ischl sports restaurants of any class, try to avoid the "tourist" ones in rush hours or make reservations. But trying the facilities the locals frequent in Bad Ischl or its surroundings is a fantastic experience (and saves you tons of money). Some "tourist" places do offer set lunch menus for about EUR 11 per person (in 2024), some of these menus are even haute cuisine, some local classics, but always an interesting experience.
If you plan to travel around by public transport (excellent) think about buying one or the other OBB Vorteils Karte and in any case, get the OBB Tickets app on your mobile (bus, tram and train tickets, connections and timetables), it's going to save you a lot of time and nerve.

During the day it is packed with tourists, but it becomes a calm town later in the evening. The town is a good starting point for several day trips to Halstadt, Dachstein, the lakes (biking from Ischl to and around Wolfgangsee highly recommended) and I am sure many other. We had 3 days of cloudy/rainy weather, and we spent these well in the spa and in the indoor sights, such as Kaiservilla and the traditional cafes in the center.

Small town as a gateway to the Lake region.
Small town as a gateway to the Lake region. Perfect for stopping by incase you want to visit Hallstat and other lake regions.
Town itself is good with few important touristic spots like Kaiservilla etc. Good scenery especially on a cloudy day. Being small town shops closes by 6 and then nothing much to do as it becomes quiet.

I have fallen in love with Bad Ischl and its “Sommerfrische”! We first went there in 2021 for the Lehár Operette Festival. It is a quiet village which falls asleep at 10pm, but such a relaxing and beautiful place to stay with so many daytime activities on offer. Close to different lakes and plenty of hiking and cycling opportunities. Lots of culture and loaded with history. I will return here every summer for many years to come.

We went to the thermal after dinner and it was pretty empty (which was great!) note that you must be naked in the Sauna zone.
We had dinner at K.U.K and it was the best dinner we had in our trip
If you come at Winter, for breakfast I recommend to eat at the place you are staying because all cafes serves food outside... for us it was too cold. We ate at a hotel in the center.

We enjoyed the coziness of this hotel, as well as the warm hospitality of the chef/manager. He was very kind to recommend affordable dining options around Bad Ischl, and also to give us clear instructions on the best way to travel to Hallstatt. We also greatly appreciated the laundry services provided by the hotel.
Very lovely, spacious villa, in 5 minutes walking distance from Bad Ischl center. Well equipped kitchen with all necessary facilities, 2 nice bedrooms and many other rooms for relaxation. Easy to get in. The city is amazing, worth staying a week.
Short bush walk behind the hotel into bad ischl town and a very close bus that runs into bad Ischl town and to Salzburg
