Developed in Japan, these cheap 'pod' hotels are a novelty for any traveller. With rows of small single bed enclosed capsules, accommodation is basic and intended to be overnight. There is separate storage for luggage and gender-separate communal bathrooms — some capsule hotels also have a sentō, a Japanese bath house, often for male guests only.
The location was great, just by the main Hakone-Yumoto Station, allowing you to get to different attractions directly with nearby trains and buses. Staff were friendly and communication was no problem with translation machine. Family-run business so it was old-fashioned Japanese style rooms, onsen plus yukata for the whole experience. One of the cheaper and convenient options to experience a stay in Hakone.
Very friendly and helpful owners. Lovely big rooms, compared to other Japanese hotels. Clean and comfortable. Complimentary coffee and has microwave and vending machine in the lobby, alongside lots of local tourist info. The owner kindly gave us a lift to a bus stop which had shelter as it was very rainy on our departure date. The rooms were functional but had some nice traditional touches. We felt it was a good location for exploring the area on the bus.
Great location off the main streets of hakone but still close to everything. Perfect for a budget stay while the generous double-bed capsule style rooms offer way more privacy than a typical hostel, which was great. The shared bathroom and kitchen was always clean and the staff were friendly.
The common area was comfortable and friendly and the rooms were quite spacious for capsules. The food was also very tasty and a good option when restaurants closed early. They also let us leave our luggage before and after check in which was very convenient.
I stayed in a double room capsule hotel here and found the overall hotel to be very beautiful, especially the lounge area. I had a bad cough and asked one of the staff late at night if there was anywhere I could get medicine. The staff told me that there was nowhere at this time, but then gave me cough drops that she had for herself which I found to be really nice. The location of the hotel is very convenient for people looking to explore the main attractions of the Hakone area.
I got lucky with the room because I had a vending machine with beer right next to my door.
The location is good, not far from bus/train stations, but it might be a bit inconvenient if you have suitcases since the road from the stations is quite busy and doesn’t have pedestrian area. For me it wasn’t an issue since I had only a backpack.
The room was spacious and clean, the staff were super friendly. Amazing outdoor onsen. Overall, I enjoyed my stay.

Tatami room spotless, spacious and comfortable. Bathroom area small for me, but normal Japanese standards.
Breakfast abundant, fresh and delicious. Dinner course very well prepared and selected. Very efficient service as well.
Hot spring area spacious, spotless, comfortable and relaxing.
Ryokan is in a very steep hill, but offers a van transfer!
Snacks and drinks available at reception and vending machines.
The double bed capsule was super spacious and really cheap at under 20£ a night. The hostel staff were very friendly and helpful in answering all my questions about sightseeing. Nice and quiet at night and free tea and coffee was a bonus!

My husband and I got a double capsule, which was quite cosy. We used the kitchen and the shared living area (Japanese style). They serve food and drinks at the bar, which is convenient when you are too lazy to go anywhere in the evening or when it rains (like in our case). Shared bathrooms and toilets are clean.
