There were great snacks avaliable for purchase at a good price which was an added bonus.

Nyakuichioji Shrine is beside the property and a mountain stream flows through the property premises. Breakfast was great, host was able to accommodate dietary needs. The hosts were super friendly and helpful and had lots of recommendations for us. The room was even nicer than the pictures. Going to the bathhouse was a really nice experience as well. I would love to stay here for a longer amount of time again!

Located in 15-minute bus ride from JR Takayama Station, Guest House & Cafe SOY is surrounded by lush greenery. Free WIFi is provided and free private parking is available on site. The property also provides free pick-up service from JR Takayama Station. The home was beautiful, spacious and clean. The hospitality was unbelievable, lovely, attentive, kind- I can’t say enough good things about Tai, his mother and the inn. It is gorgeous, spacious yet cozy. It was a top experience and should not be missed. The inn is an hour walk from town and is best accessed by car but Tai will pick you up and drive you around. He took us to a neighborhood we were interested in for dinner and then picked us up immediately afterwards. Breakfast was delightful and they even made a special vegetarian dish for me. Bathrooms are shared yet private. The rooms are huge and so pretty! The traditional mattresses were cozy and comfy.

Reopened after renovation in 2022, Auberge Hidanomori is situated in quiet hills, a 10-minute shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station. The property offers free WiFi access in rooms and in public areas including the shared TV lounge and the terrace. This has been my favorite place to stay in all of Japan. I absolutely loved the decor and the meal service. There are two private baths that you can use on a first-come, first-served basis and they were great. The hotel is extremely minimalist which goes with the theme of "letting the time pass by slowly". The dinner and breakfast are incredible and for only 7000 yen extra I would definitely recommend it to anyone staying here. They also have an extensive wine library and for a few thousand more yen you can include wine pairing with your meal. This was one of the best meals I've had in Japan, and I've dined at over a dozen Michelin-Starred places in Tokyo. It's also a brief drive over to Hida no Sato (Folk Village), and you can get a shuttle to take you there.

Guests at Guesthouse Tomaru can experience Japanese-style futon bedding on a tatami (woven-straw) floor in the private rooms. Dormitory rooms have futon bedding as well; bottom bunks sit directly on the tatami flooring, and top bunks use a wooden bunk bed frame. Cute little place, owner helped us plan out our next day in Kamikochi and was very patient and kind 😊
