Located along Houshi River, Houshi Onsen Chojukan features a public hot spring bath, Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi and Japanese cuisine. A wooden building stemming from 100 years ago, the property breathes a historical atmosphere. It was so beautiful! It is a bit remote, but thats exactly what we liked about it! It lies in a nice valley, that in december was a bit snowy. Ofcourse, the very traditional building was so sophisticated and beautiful, but even though it felt such high end (and it is!), we felt comfortable there. It was easy to relax, the Onsen are amazing and beautiful. Very kind staff as well, they spoke english. The food was exceptional as well. One of us was vegetarian, we let them know beforehand and it was no problem. Would recommend at least 2 night stays. The price for the value you get is exceptional.

The air-conditioned rooms have tatami (woven-straw) floors and Japanese futon bedding. A flat-screen TV, a fridge and an electric kettle with green tea bags are included in each. The en suite bathroom comes with a hairdryer. The property is near public transportation, which is a big plus for a solo traveller without a car. I took a room with a private onsen, which was really enjoyable. The dinner and breakfast were all excellent. The staff were very nice and accommodating. I really felt warm-hearted when they tried to explain the dinner menu in english and did a handwritten english translation of the breakfast menu. They also offered to drop me off at the bus station and reminded me when to expect the bus. It was incredibly sweet. I do love the area as it was a good break from the city’s hustle and bustle. The Ikaho footsteps is about a 5-minute walk. It has a lot of shops so it is a good distraction while climbing the stairs.

Boasting hot spring baths in a spectacular outdoor setting by Takaragawa River, Japanese-style hotel Takaragawa Onsen Osenkaku is a 10-minute drive from Hodaigi Ski Resort. It offers free Wi-Fi at the lobby and a free station transfer. The breakfast and dinner was absolutely lovely to experience, with an amazing assortment of different dishes that seem small but are very filling. The rooms stay warm even though it is freezing outside, and the onsen is absolutely lovely in the weather. There are people who speak English that make you feel right at home, and give you very precise instructions on how to get to the onsen from your rooms. Staff are wonderful, please come here if you can make it!
