It had a beautiful saltwater pool and also stair access to go swimming out in the sea. The breakfast buffet was very good, omelettes to order. And it was a quiet location a little bit away from old town.

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It's an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as the island's slopes and colorful towns.
Founded in 1424, its location allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbor, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos on Madeira. Accommodations located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, are also available for those trying to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.

Plenty of restaurants, a decent enough city if not the best spot to sightsee. It is just a place to stay and dine, otherwise explore the rest of the island.
The cable car and the private garden are great to visit though.

I was initially unsure about where to base myself during my visit to Madeira, but I’m so glad I chose Funchal for my first time on the island. I felt very safe, and having nearby restaurants was incredibly convenient. Everything I needed was within easy reach.

This is a pretty special city.
This is a pretty special city. All easy to get to and walk around, with old town, markets, and modern shops within easy reach. If that sounds normal for a city, well, that's not the full picture: you can take the cable cars to Monte, then on to the botanical gardens, going from busy city to peaceful countryside in one short, unusual, and exciting journey. You can then ride a basket toboggan partway down the hill again! The restaurants are a lush blend of traditional and authentic, modern, and chic dining. This is a must-see city. Oh, and when you tire of the city, take any of the many boats from the quays and find a new kind of adventure. We did two boat trips and loved them both.

Funchal is a fantastic city with a wide range of exciting attractions for tourists. We visited the Tropical and Botanical Gardens, took the cable car, rode down the streets in a toboggan basket, enjoyed a Madeira wine tasting, explored beautiful churches, and indulged in some amazing food! While we didn’t visit any museums or the market, there’s still plenty to do in the city. We highly recommend Casa Velha for a great dinner!

Funchal is a wonderfully beautiful and harmoniously...
Funchal is a wonderfully beautiful and harmoniously developed capital of the island of Madeira. I am impressed by the architect and construction engineers, developing the city at an incredible pace in such a complex mountainous environment (and for the whole island). The airport is expanded and with excellent organization. The city transport - also.
As a recommendation, I would add that the frequency of bus transport should not be drastically reduced in the evening hours.
Our stay exceed our expectations. We were welcomed by Sidonio and supported through the entire stay by the whole team, from advice on the best trails to where to get the bus. The rooftop bar is amazing and offers every comfort - it is more expensive than the average in Funchal and Madeira, but worth it. The apartment was furnished to the highest standard and everything is curated to be also aesthetically pleasing. The location is central and the hotel has a number of parking spots reserved for the guests, which is a great benefit.
A family owned hotel apartment, the owner is a sweet man that takes care of you from the moment you arrive, till the last moment you leave the property. They bring fresh bread to your door every morning, they recommend you the best local restaurants. My tip: let the owner tell you where to go and where to eat, then you will enjoy Madeira from the local point of view and not instagram and bloggers!
P.s: the sea view balcony is a blessing and although you are in Funchal , you’re still away from punks and drunk tourists!
I stayed with Luiz for thr first few days on Madeira and it was phenomenal. I loved the beautiful views from thr garden overlooking Funchal and the sea. What made this stay so amazing were all the details Luiz gave us with recommandations, maps, bus routes and so on. The bungalow was very comfortable with everything we needed. There is a bus stop close by and a supermarket as well.
Luiz was such a helpful host, always available to assist. Thank you! From Eoghan and Gené
Location, location, location - tough it would be hard to find a place to park a car. It is close to the old town, close to SAM bus terminal with buses to the airport. For the price it was a reasonable option for our last night in Funchal and Madeira.
We also had an excellent night sleep - it was on a weekend tough, so no noises from a nearby school.
This hotel truly merits it's 5 star rating. If you want exceptional staff, food, bedrooms, pool areas etc this is the place to come. Close access into Funchal centre.
