Superb location in historic center! Great price, simple, clean with access to breakfast. You are greeted and assisted by the former owner who now manages the property. She is kind and solicitous of her guests’ needs and goes the extra mile to ensure their comfort. The walk up is a bit steep but we are 3 women in our 70s and managed.
There are two onsens for guests. The one for women is bright and cheerful.

Loved the peace and quiet after spending time in busy Tokyo. The morning markets and the Old Town were relaxing to stroll through and the locals were very helpful. We would definitely stay here again. Such a beautiful historical town.

It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!!
I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

Takayama is a beautiful town.
Takayama is a beautiful town. It has a well preserved old district with historic buildings. We visited during spring and took a day trip to the ropeway. It would look amazing during winter. The people were super friendly & enjoyed tourists company.
We had chosen the room with private onsen with breakfast and dinner included.
We were shown to our room by an Obasan (As our room was deep inside the ryokan towards the end!), and she explained everything about our room and the facilities available! Modern amenities with the rustic traditional ryokan, love it.
We had an allocated private space to dine in at the restaurant, and the set course meal was really enjoyable!
As we spoke little to none Japanese, the staff were thoroughly helpful and tried their best in explaining.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Wood Takayama. I highly recommend that anyone who goes to Takayama to stay there. The facilities are great. The staff is amazing. The traditional Japanese breakfast is excellent and fantastic free happy hour from 5pm - 11pm. We were truly impressed with the service and the staff. We had difficulties getting a taxi to go to the train station on our day of departure. one of the staff used his own car to take us to the station. He went above and beyond his duties. That's service.
My husband and I visited Japan for 20 days and this was one of our favorite places! It is an incredibly beautiful, well cared for traditional ryokan. The building is old, but that gives it so much character! The staff here were exceptional. They were incredibly kind and so friendly we felt very well taken care of during our stay. The onsens were beautiful as well! Also the futons they had were some of the most comfortable beds we slept in during our entire trip to Japan! I really can't recommend this ryokan enough!
Renovated by a hotel chain (Tabist), Kazeyuki offers a basic ryokan experience (without the meals) in the middle of the Japanese alps. The private baths were the highlight of our stay. If the baths were public, they could become a cluster and spread Covid. So I loved that this hotel provided the baths as private for guests in a first come first serve system. We could enjoy them with peace of mind. There are 4 baths available so there was always vacancy. The room was spacious and quiet.
This ryokan has an old main room in a traditional building with an attached newer building with the rooms in a ryokan style. It does a wonderful job of providing the ryokan experience a short five minute walk from the Takayama Station. We stayed two nights, had the excellent Japanese breakfast both days, and booked the Kaiseki dinner the second night for 6600 yen. It is definitely something worth doing at least once and was a pleasant experience. All the staff was great.
The staff was very polite and helpful.
The room was very clean and confortable. Wasn't big, but Japan's hotel rooms very rarely are.
The location was perfect - less than 5 minutes from the train station and bus terminal. And less than 10 from Takayama's historical center.
During the time we were there they offered a happy our on early evenings - 1 drink per guest + curry and rice. Which was a very happy surprise for us!
They also have public baths (onsen).
The service was excellent! From the front desk staff to the hotel staff (especially the girl who set up our dinner, she had glasses and a ponytail), everyone was so kind and helpful, you could feel all the love they put in the guests service! Also the dinner/breakfast was absolutely delicious! One of the best we had in Japan so far! And the onsen too! So happy we could experience them in the beautiful ryokan! We'll be back for sure! Thank you❤️
Absolutely endearing staff who add a lot of charm to this establishment. This ryokan is remote and that is the point, right there in the middle of the mountains. Original Edo structure of an old house, with well designed extentions and typical ryokan rooms. I love it! Delicious japanese breakfast in private rooms. Next time we will try the Kaiseki. Beautifull onsen which however, has no view over the river nearby.
Very old beautiful traditional Japanese Ryokan. You can really feel the hospitality from the moment you enter untill the moment you checkout. The included dinner was something I honestly was a little scared of (not knowing what you will eat sometimes is challenging) but they exceeded all my expectations. Everything they gave me to eat was absolutely AMAZING. i regret not having asked the recipe for certain dishes.
The rooms were spacious and so comfortable. We booked a traditional Japanese room which was so nice, the staff were all so polite and helpful. It is connected to the souvenirs centre, we got a voucher from the hotel. Breakfast at the hotel was amazing! We were served traditional style Japanese breakfast. It is the closest we could get to experiencing a Ryokan i Takayama that allowed kids.
First time in a Ryokan so it was a very interesting and pleasant experience. Sleeping on futons was fine and the clothing provided to wear throughout the hotel - and in the street if you wanted to - added to the sense of the place. Not surprisingly the aura of the hotel was very different from the other hotels around Japan where we had stayed.
Amazing ryokan that gives an authentic Japanese experience. The owners are charming and welcoming. Great location, walking distance to all sites in central Takayma. Clean hotel, lovely room, great onsen... in short, a special experience especially the meals that look like a work of art.
The hotel has everything you need for a confortable and ncie stay in Takayama. It is very close to the JR station (like 5min walk) and the city centre. The room was a bit bigger that the "japanease standard". The onsen was also really nice. The cost/quality ratio is very very high!
I loved this ryokan! It provides you a really Japanese experience. The staffs are amazing, and everything is clean! The best value for money. They also have a Irori / fire room where you can book your make your own bbq . I highly recommend using it.
We had such a lovely time at Sumiyoshi Ryokan. The owners were very kind and welcoming. I highly recommend the dinner there which was beyond our expectations and one of the best we have had thus far in our trip in Japan.
It was an authentic Japanese ryokan experience. We got to sleep on futons and bathe in an onsen. Location was super close to the train station and reasonably close to the old part of town.
Very kind host. Very good position near the historical street of Takayama and near the morning market. An amazing experience in a typical Japanese Ryokan. Fantastic onsen.
