I've been coming here for 60 years to visit family. There's so much to do, the market is fun. Good beaches and family friendly attractions nearby, but you do need a car for a lot of them. Walk or cycle the Tarka trail with bike hire from the railway station.

The town has a number of independent cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs. Also an independent cinema and theatre, and lots of local scenic walks. There’s a local museum, old churches, and independent shops to explore. It’s an easy distance by bus or car to the north Devon coast.

I love North Devon in general. Beaches, scenery and people. Can’t comment on Barnstaple as I don’t tend to go into large towns but they used to have a great indoor market(if it’s still going after Covid?)

A nice, but average small town.
A nice, but average small town. Not the town, but the people here impressed us, in terms of politeness and willingness. Their courtesy and the trips we made to rural and coastal areas provided us an overall pleasant stay.

Found it good as a base as it was pretty central so not too far to visit places such as Ilfracombe, Instow, Bideford, Woolacombe. Had a great time at the wildlife and dinosaur park. We love gardens and visited RHS Rosemoor, Taderley Park and Marwood

A charming little town in a beautiful setting.
A charming little town in a beautiful setting.
Its central location makes it ideal for transport to the rest of Devon. I had a great time in the town and other interesting sites.
It is recommended to bring warm clothing if the weather is windy.

The hosts were so lovely and welcoming. They let us in the room way before 3pm and we just chilled and had a pint whilst they cleaned it. Great value for money. We ordered the breakfast and they also let my father in law come for the very cheap breakfast (cooked beautifully and again, great value for money) so that saved him a fortune as his hotel breakfast was very pricey. Wonderful fun pub to enjoy and felt well at home. Thanks for a fantastic trip to Barnstaple! Photo of the nearby Valley of the Rocks - well worth a walk there.
Was extremely surprised at the location and the hotel. Staff were great and the room was huge! Literally a 5 minute drive to Barnstaple and north Devon beaches 20 minutes in other direction. Breakfast was a little disappointing, especially for the price of the room but that could just be my personal preferences. Would recommend and would stay again.
From the minute we arrived the receptionist was very pleasant and helpful our room was beautiful and looked out to the river had fresh fruit, a box of chocolates and stocked mini bar all included which definitely made it feel extra special thanks to all at the imperial hotel for a great stay will definitely be coming back 😊
